tur(i)ntogreen international design competition

Turin Architecture Contest, Italy

The Research and Documentation Centre in Technology, Architecture and City in Developing Countries (CRD-PVS) at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy) is glad to announce after an intensive evaluation process run by the International Jury, the winners of the tur(i)ntogreen international design competition have been named.

The tur(i)ntogreen competition (sponsored by the UN-HABITAT within the “I’m a City Changer” campaign) was open to University students from around the world. Participants were invited to apply their creative talents in developing new multidisciplinary solutions for a sustainable and inclusive city reflecting on new forms of urban management and regeneration through agro – housing and urban – farming models.

Results obtained are excellent and beyond any expectations, both for the high number of participants from all over the world (308 students organized in 109 groups, 46 universities involved from over 24 countries are only some references…) and for the quality and originality of the submitted materials.

UN-backed green community design competition launched

The University of Salford is behind a global student design competition, backed by UN Habitat, to find the best ideas for a sustainable green space on a giant car park in Turin.

The car park is on the edge of the city’s famous Fiat factory and is used for storing newly manufactured vehicles. It is sited in a green corridor of land that is at the heart of a strategic area of the city, but in itself is isolated and unattractive.

For the exercise, the winning team of up to four people will be required to create an inclusive design for an agricultural area that features affordable housing and opportunities for education and retail. It has been designed with a timescale that would enable it to be a project for a university semester.

The winning designer or team will receive a number of high-profile placements in architectural practices in Italy, with the possibility of their design solutions being adopted by the UNHabitat at other sites around the world.

The competition was the idea of Turin native, Riccardo Balbo from the University’s School of the Built Environment, along with the Polytechnic of Turin “These design competitions are extremely useful for students and the sponsor organisations,” he said.

“We’re hoping to get some of the best students in the world creating designs for a truly groundbreaking use of an urban wasteland. We want to see ideas which incorporate sustainable, affordable and enjoyable lifestyles for people of all backgrounds.”

The competition is part of the ‘I’m a City Changer’ campaign and also part of the Global Housing Strategy to the Year 2025, both recently announced by UN Habitat.

Entries are open to all currently registered students of any discipline and those who have graduated since 1 January 2011. Winners will be announced on 21 January 2013.

Individuals or teams of students are encouraged to enter the architecture competition by completing and uploading an electronic entry on the competition website. The entries are due on or before December 21st (11.59 pm CET).
