Dongting Lake Museum, namely Dongting Lake Ecological Economic Zone Planning Museum is a large-scale comprehensive museum building located in the cultural pavilion area of Dongting Lake Expo Park in Junshan District, Yueyang City, Hunan Province, on the east side of Tourist Road and the west bank of the Hao River.

The overall plan organizes outdoor space landscapes and stadium buildings according to “one axis, two belts and three cores” spatial structure: “One Axis” is the spatial guiding axis from Tourism Road to the east till waterfront cape; “two belts” are waterfront landscape belt along the banks of Hao River, and the green landscape buffer zone separating the cultural venue area from the amusement park area and the commercial leisure service area; “three cores” are three cluster buildings located in the space divided by “one axis” and “two belts”, including museums, one avenue and two centers, and reserved cultural facilities and buildings.

The museum consists of General Hall, Cow fish Hall, Birds Hall and Ecological Planning Hall, located on the eastern care of the construction site, surrounded by water on three sides, forming a visual core on the space guiding axis, and is a center building surrounded by the waterfront landscape belt. It has the best geographic location, and the building is also easy to become iconic.

On the east side of the building is Dongting Lake Landscape Culture Plaza, which can be used for organizing large-scale activities and evacuating tourists. It has clear planning districts; on the west side, the main road of Expo Park is connected with municipal administration roads; in order to create a friendly environment favorable to walk in the park, a centralized parking lot and an electric vehicle charging station are installed on the south and north sides of the main entrance. The tourist buses are also parked centrally here. Business parking and VIP parking area are also arranged around the museum.

The museum’s main building includes four branch halls: General Hall, Planning Hall, Cow fish Hall, and Birds Hall. Each hall has its own entrance and exit, which is easy for management.

The entrance and exit of Cow fish Hall are located on the north side of the first floor, the entrance to Birds Hall is located on the south side of the first floor, and the entrance and exit of General Hall and Ecological Planning Hall are set as the main entrances on the east and west side of the building.

The general hall connects Cow fish Hall Exhibition Hal and Birds Hall Exhibition Hal on both north and south side.The second floor of the building is a comprehensive hall. The central shared space has an audience service area, a spectator experience area, and a 5D video hall. At the south side are intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall, warehouse and supporting rooms. On the north side of the third floor of the building is Ecological Planning Hall, and an internal management room on the south side, including warehouses and office research rooms. The roof also sets a bird watching platform and a landscape courtyard. The ground floor is set as equipment room, cow fish observation hall and tourist sharing hall.

The building is designed in accordance with China’s three-star green building standard. By using renewable materials and high-strength materials, combined with photo voltaic power generation, respiratory curtain wall, vertical and roof greening, permeable pavement, rainwater collection and utilization, waste heat utilization, high-efficiency light sources, intelligent building control systems and other green building technologies to ensure the comfort and efficiency of construction operation and use.
