Located in the city of Juazeiro do Norte (CE), in the Cariri region of northeastern Brazil, the Unileão Academy-School supports the Physical Education program of the University Center, serving students and staff. The project is anchored in a pre-existing plateau that determined its siting and directly addresses the semi-arid climate of the northeastern backlands, articulating constructive rationality, environmental performance, and spatial clarity.
The building’s placement on the plateau oriented the complex along the East–West axis, exposing its larger façades to solar incidence throughout the year. In response to this condition, specific thermal comfort strategies were adopted to mitigate heat gain and ensure adequate environmental performance for the physical activities carried out inside.
The architectural concept is structured around five circles with a radius of 7.80 meters, comprising 6.00 meters of usable area and 1.80 meters allocated to internal gardens. Each circle functions as an autonomous programmatic cell: two house weight-training areas, one contains reception and cafeteria, another accommodates aerobic activities, and the last concentrates support spaces — restrooms, storage, coordination, and evaluation room.
Directly connected to one another, the cells form a linear complex approximately 64 meters in length. Three interspersed verandas qualify these connections, marking the main entrance and providing support for functional training activities.
To reduce direct solar exposure indoors, the façades were designed in three complementary layers. The outermost layer consists of a patterned arrangement of spaced solid ceramic bricks that filter sunlight, provide shading, and add three-dimensionality to the façade. The intermediate layer incorporates internal gardens with species adapted to the local climate, contributing to the creation of a milder microclimate. The third layer is composed of pivoting clear-glass frames that allow for cross-ventilation and, when necessary, mechanical cooling.
The roof system uses thermo-acoustic panels, reinforcing thermal control within the building. The material palette emphasizes exposed concrete and solid ceramic brick in its natural tone, expressing the constructive logic. Industrial flooring and exposed installations lend an industrial character to the interior, consistent with the building’s use and with a direct architectural approach free of superfluous finishes.
The Academy-School rationalizes spatial distribution and makes its programmatic organization legible through clear geometry. At the same time, it explores tactile and visual qualities associated with materials, light and shadow effects, and vegetation. The result is a building that combines environmental performance, constructive robustness, and qualified permanence for its users.

About Lins Arquitetos Associados
Founded in 2011 by Cíntia, George, Jorge, and Deborah Lins, the firm is based in Juazeiro do Norte, in the Cariri region of Ceará, Brazil. Working across all scales — from urban design to furniture — the practice is guided by respect for the site of intervention: adapting buildings to climate, incorporating cultural aspects, and using local materials and labor. Experimentation is a constant pursuit, combining innovation with established construction techniques.
Lins’ practice reinforces the identity of place, translating into architectural space the colors, textures, and ways of life of the Brazilian backlands. This vision affirms that architectural solutions are not replicable formulas; they emerge from the territory in which they are embedded, strengthening the relationship between community, climate, and architecture.
