Bedroom Makeovers

Add value to your bedroom with DIY

Most of us will spend a significant portion of our lives in our bedrooms, with studies showing that we actually spend, on average, a third of our lives asleep. So with this in mind, making our bedroom a comfortable and relaxing environment is probably a very good idea.

A crucial element of any bedroom is the comfiness and appropriateness of the mattrress. They need to be replaced at regular intervals, certainly every five years. If replacing it is worth checking out Real Mattress Reviews. And if you are making changes, then it could pay to consider how a spot of DIY could create a feeling of space, while potentially making it more attractive to future buyers.

So if you are looking to maximise your home’s value, what are the options?

Bedroom remodel – and reap the rewards

Kitchens are often seen as the first place to start when upgrading your house. However, bedrooms are another obvious way to make your home feel more liveable. And while there are many different levels you can aim for, the good news is that you can remodel your bedroom fairly simply with a little DIY and loving care.

First, think about breaking out the brushes. Painting your bedroom should be within the skill set of many of us, and can have an immediate impact. Opting for simple, pale colours can provide the backdrop for any other changes you want to make – and a neutral shade will be a bonus when the time comes to sell.

Create space – add value

Once you have given your room a lick of paint, it’s time to think about how you can make the space work harder for you. A simple way to provide a new area can be to use a curtain room divider – for example, to use an alcove as new storage space.

If you are really pushed for space, you could do away with the bed altogether – at least in terms of having it on display all the time. Rather than making your bed the focal point of the room, you could install a fold-up or wall bed. Retracting neatly into an alcove or cupboard, a wall bed is designed to be relatively simple to fit, at least for a handyman.

Fitted wardrobes can offer the best storage options and can be designed to fit around awkward angles, sloping ceilings and uneven walls, making the most of any space you have available. Sliding and bi-folding doors can save floor space, while careful use of glass and lighting can create a sense of interior space.

If you have a large bedroom, or an L-shaped space, you could also choose to create a walk-in wardrobe, which would be seen as a significant improvement by some buyers.

Of course, if you have the money to make larger improvements to your bedroom, you could choose to install an ensuite bathroom. It’s thought that most families looking to buy a property almost expect two bathrooms, so this addition could potentially help to sway any potential buyers if you do decide to sell. Depending on your budget, there are options to stick to a basic, practical bathroom or take it a step further by adding attractive features such as under-floor heating and free-standing bath tubs.

So, when rethinking your bedroom space, bear in mind that substantial changes, such as fitted wardrobes or a luxury bathroom, can be expensive. It’s a good idea, before deciding on the scope of your improvements, to weigh up whether the initial cost will in fact reap any rewards, or if they will at least withstand the test of time.

It may be convenient to take out a loan to pay for these significant changes – though they could potentially add value to your home when the time comes to sell.
