InJoy Snow Hotel, Thailand
InJoy Snow Hotel Bangkok stems from a unique and beautiful vision. The owner, a Thai-French individual who has spent many years in Paris, was inspired by France’s climate and geography. Her goal was to create a hotel in Bangkok that evokes the ambiance of a French snow scene, achieved through sustainable design principles that emphasize the restoration of natural elements in architecture.
Architects Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee from HAS Design and Research carried forward the owner’s vision, using the concept of “Thai Snow” to seamlessly connect the architectural space with the surrounding landscape. They designed a serene retreat that contrasts with Bangkok’s chaotic urban environment, offering visitors a tranquil sanctuary for the soul.
The architecture features continuous folding perforated aluminum panels that cleverly shield the building from the bustling surroundings. These panels maximize openings to let in light while visually evoking morning fog. The undulating perforations not only create a human-scale interaction at street level but also filter sunlight and channel local monsoons, cooling the interiors and creating a refreshing atmosphere.
Inside, the panels transform into delicate, flowing threads in the foyer, offering a transition between interior and exterior spaces. These nearly thousand threads connect vertically between floors and horizontally across spaces, mimicking the ethereal beauty of snowflakes. This dynamic design enhances the spatial experience and becomes a focal point of the hotel.
In the guest rooms, the architects use varying densities of fabric to create visual permeability in response to sunlight. These movable fabrics support the “Seasonal Room” concept, allowing spaces to adapt based on weather and guest needs. The inclusion of local stone and vegetation enriches the natural landscape, culminating in features like a mist spa hidden amidst a bamboo forest.
Sustainability is central to the hotel’s philosophy. The perforated panels facilitate natural air circulation, the threads block harsh sunlight while preserving transparency, and the movable fabrics offer flexible room layouts. Together, these elements create a distinct architectural vernacular, harmonizing functionality with aesthetics.
InJoy Snow Hotel Bangkok provides a serene respite from the city’s dense environment. Its snow-inspired design contrasts beautifully with its surroundings, offering visitors a sense of spiritual tranquility and a deeply immersive, ritualistic experience.
