Public Building of the Year Presented by Martin Lesjak - Rolling Stones

The project Rolling Stones, the conversion and redevelopment of the Cannon Hall in Graz, Austria, was designed by INNOCAD architecture office in cooperation with KMKG Studio and ANASTASIA SU as a new information centre for Graz Tourismus. The architects used murnockerl (cobblestone) as he basic building block of the concept, as a symbol of permanence.

“The continuation of the cobblestone (Murnockerln) theme throughout the project makes an important link to the heritage of the building. The design has been sensitively executed: the space has been modernised and made accessible to the public, without compromising the existing architecture” – the jury commented.

Martin Lesjak, with INNOCAD, carries out numerous projects in housing, offices, hotel, health service, retail, interior and product design. INNOCAD has been awarded for LEAF Interior Design Awards 2013 and was nominated for FX Awards 2013 (with the project Rolling Stones), for the 34th interior awards (XAL cc, HQ Microsoft Vienna), for the best architects label 2013 (HQ Microsoft Vienna, Rose am Lend) and many more.

The building is situated nearby a mountain lake and is configured with two major volumes, taking advantage of the natural form of the site, which presents two major level drops alternated with two approximately flat areas: one volume that houses the rooms and reception, and the second volume that contains living and dining spaces, the restaurant kitchen and technical spaces.

Until 2006 the site located at the intersection between B. Mumuleanu and Tunari Street was a neighborhood vulcanization shop for cars. Between 2006 – and February 2015 the site was empty and people were mistakenly using it as a place for garbage.
