The 17th iteration of the ABB awards recognise the growing influence of some of the most impactful designs in our built environment with the Zaha Hadid Architects, ‘Port House’, Antwerp, Belgium crowned, as ‘Overall Winner 2018’. This year, the prestigious architectural ceremony received even greater exposure from to the global industry, through combining the ABB LEAF Awards with its partner event, LEAF Forum 2018 which took place on the 17th and 18th October.

The overall winner from Zaha Hadid Architects, Port House in Antwerp, repurposes, renovates and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters for the port, bringing together 500 staff that previously worked in separate buildings around the city. A sustainable and energy-efficient design was developed, reaching a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM environmental rating. With constant references to the Scheldt, the city of Antwerp and the dynamics of its port, married with the successful renovation and reuse of a redundant fire station – the new Port House will instantly serve the community well and in the future following its planned expansion.
