Surface Architects

Founded in 1999 by Richard Scott, Hull BSF Design Champion, and Andy MacFee, Project Architect for the Stirling Prize-winning Peckham Library, London, this design studio is now a leading architectural and design practice of its generation, with offices in London and Hull.

Award-winning buildings have gained Surface a reputation for innovation in how contemporary architecture looks, feels and works.

The team works in many sectors including Arts & Culture, Education and Commercial; encouraging a transfer of ideas between them.

Completed/recent projects include Birkbeck Film & Media Studies Centre, Endike Primary School.

Other sources suggest the practice was formed by Richard in 1996, in collaboration with philosopher Jeremy Weate and architect Kristen Whittle.

Their first project Soft-space won first prize in the Shinkenchiku-Sha Residential Design Award in Japan and Aquaphilia was one of the Ideal Rooms exhibited at the RIBA in 1997. At this time Richard worked for Will Alsop and taught History & Theory at the The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London and the AA – Architectural Association, London – with Jeremy Weate.

From 1999, Richard concentrated on Surface, winning a competition for the headquarters for new media company Razorfish. The design studiop’s next project was to be their largest: the £6M Southeastern European University in Macedonia was designed and constructed in 10 months, using pre-fabrication.
