Delfina Foundation
The Delfina Foundation has recently undergone a major £1.4m expansion, to make it the largest artist residency provider in London when it reopens in January 2014.
The project’s architects are Chris Romer-Lee and James Lowe, directors of London-based Studio Octopi (‘Small Project – Architect of the Year’ finalist, Architect of the Year Awards 2013) with Shahira Fahmy.

Shahira Fahmy Architects

Shahira Fahmy was born in Egypt and is the founder and director of Shahira Fahmy Architects. The practice was established in Cairo in 2005, in the same year that Shahira was awarded the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Young Architect Award. Since then, the practice has developed an international presence, recently winning competitions in Switzerland and London, and garnering attention from the New York Times and the Financial Times.

Shahira’s work ranges from architecture and masterplanning to product design and exhibition curation, often in collaboration with other firms. Such collaborations have included: the new campus for the American University in Cairo (2005) and the Ahmed Bahaa El-Din Cultural Center (2010). Alongside her practice, Shahira has been a lecturer, panellist and critic at Universities and Institutions such as Cairo University, RIBA, and the Harvard Arab Alumni Association.

Amongst other honours, Shahira Fahmy Architects was awarded the Green Good Design Award by the Chicago Athenaeum in 2010, and was the first Egyptian practice to take part in Salone Satellite, Milan Design Week (2007).

INTRODUCTION
Shahira H. Fahmy is an architect who’s work strives to make a balance between new spatial concepts and existing context: culture, tradition, urban morphology, climatic…etc. in the pursuit of language that encompasses all fields of design, ranging from urban scale through to products, interiors and furniture. Along with her design practice she is engaged in teaching and research.

EDUCATION AND TEACHING
Shahira studied architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University, Egypt, graduated with honors in 1997 and was awarded the Theory and History of Architecture Course Prize as well as the Structural Theories Prize award. She then became an assistant lecturer.

She received a Masters in Architecture from Cairo University in 2004. She is currently teaching at the architectural department, Cairo University. In addition to her teaching career, she worked as an architect with the leading engineering firm in the Middle East “Dar El Handasah” 2000-2002, and then in 2004 she established her own private Architectural practice “Shahira H. Fahmy – Architects” based in Cairo, Egypt, providing Architecture, Interior Design and Furniture Design. Also, during the period 1998 – 2007, she has participated in a number of international and national architectural and interior design competitions.

PROJECTS
Shahira H. Fahmy Architects engage in assisting the production of various scale projects, from concept design to construction supervision, in a series of research-based designs and competitions.

Shahira H. Fahmy Architects Milestones projects includes: the submittal of the interior design services for special areas in the New Campus development project the American University in Cairo, working as a sub-Consultant for the Prime Architect the renowned architectural firm Abdelhalim Ibrahim CDC – SASAKI Associate Inc. Phase: Design Development

The Administration Building Special Areas: conference rooms, president office, provost, alumni lounge, and support areas.
The Performing & Visual Art Department, “The Theater” 300 persons.

Shahira H. Fahmy designated to be part of highly select team of renowned artists: Adam Henien among others assigned to develop the Art Vision for the New AUC Campus.

Competition entries include the Grand Egyptian Museum (2002).
Shahira H. Fahmy’s practice has also worked on various types of projects: residential, retails, corporate, furniture and products.

Architectural Projects

CURRENT PROJECTS
Shahira H. Fahmy Architects is working on a variety of projects including:
The architecture of a number of residential projects private houses on the outskirts of Cairo; the interior design of number of private apartments and houses on the north coast and Cairo.

She is working on the interior design services for special areas (Administration Building, Oriental Hall & Theatre PVA) in the New Campus development project of the American University in Cairo which will be inaugurated in September 2008.

The practice is part of a French team of architects led by the French firm Petitdidier Prioux are also on the final competition shortlist of architects to design the restructuration of the site of the Mounira Palace’ for the Institut Francais D’ Archeologie Orientale du Caire IFAO, launched by the French Ministry of National Education Research and Higher education.

In April 2008 Shahira H. Fahmy is going to participate for the second time in the annual international furniture fair “Salone Internazionale del Mobile” in its show “SaloneSatellite” for emerging young talents.
