O’Donnell + Tuomey
O’Donnell + Tuomey, established by Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey in 1988, has been involved with urban design, cultural and educational buildings, houses and housing projects in Ireland, the Netherlands and the UK. Winners of more than 60 national and international awards for their work across the past twenty years; they have been seven times winners of the AAI Downes Medal; three times finalists for the Mies Van der Rohe Award for European Architecture in 1997, 1999, and 2003; three times shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 1999, 2005 and 2011; and won the RIAI Gold Medal in 2005.
They were selected to represent Ireland in a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2004 and a group show “The Lives of Spaces” in 2008. Recent cultural projects include Gaeláras Irish Language and Cultural Centre in Derry (completed in 2009) and the Lyric Theatre Belfast (opened in 2011).

O’Donnell + Tuomey established their partnership in 1988 with two public commissions, the Irish Film Institute and Ranelagh Multidenominational School. Current work includes educational and cultural projects in Ireland, the UK and Europe. The Photographers’ Gallery, London, was completed in 2012. The New Students’ Centre for the London School of Economics is due for completion in 2013. The Campus Redevelopment Masterplan for the Central European University, Budapest is at design stage.
The twin themes of their practice, urban regeneration on sensitive sites and integration of landscape and architecture, have established common ground in the site-specific origin of their architectural concepts and shared social values. Their practice is closely connected the education of architects, and they both teach at the University College Dublin.
O’Donnell + Tuomey were awarded the RIAI Gold Medal in 2005. They are seven times winners of the AAI Downes Medal. They have been shortlisted for the Mies van der Rohe European Architecture Award, the Stirling Prize and the Lubetkin Prize. Their work has been published and exhibited in London, Ljubljana, New York, Paris, Tokyo and at the Venice Biennale. O’Donnell + Tuomey Selected Works was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2006. Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey are members of Aosdána, the affiliation of creative artists in Ireland. In 2010 they were elected honorary fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
SHEILA O’DONNELL graduated from University College Dublin in 1976. In 1980 she was received a Masters Degree in Environmental Design from the Royal College of Art London. She subsequently worked for James Stirling on the design of the Clore gallery at the Tate.
After returning to Dublin in 1981, Sheila continued to teach and lecture at the University College Dublin and in London, where she has also served on the RIBA Awards group. Her watercolour studies of landscape and building form have been exhibited in the Royal Academy in London and in the Royal Irish Academy.
In the early 1980s, she and a group of colleagues in Dublin started a debate about the future of the city. They set up the Blue Studio Architecture Gallery, published books and made design proposals. These activities led to the formation of Group 91, a collaborative of young architectural practices which won a competition for the urban regeneration of Temple Bar in the historic centre of Dublin. The work, which was completed in 1996, has been published worldwide, exhibited in the Architecture League in New York in 1998 and won the UIA medal in 2002.
JOHN TUOMEY graduated from UCD in 1976 and received his Masters Degree in 2004. He worked with James Stirling on the design and construction of the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie. Returning to Dublin, he completed two buildings for the Office of Public Works. These projects – a laboratory and a courthouse – established the theoretical and contextual basis for his future work.
He has taught at University College Dublin since 1981, chaired external examining boards in the UK, lectured widely at schools of architecture in Europe and North America, and taught at Princeton and Harvard. In 2008 he was appointed inaugural Professor of Architectural Design at University College Dublin. He initiated the Architectural Association of Ireland annual Awards for excellence in architectural design in 1986 and was president of the AAI in 1992-93. He was Chair of the jury of the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2009. He is the author of Architecture, Craft and Culture (Gandon Editions, 2004 & 2008).
