Sir George Skene served as Provost of Aberdeen in 1676-85 and was a rich merchant.

Before he was a resident the house was occupied by Matthew Lumsden, a wealthy merchant, who purchased the property in 1622.

Key spaces in this historic building are the Painted Gallery and the Costume Gallery. When we visited in winter it was quiet but the spiral stairs at either end of the property are very tight so navigation might be slow in summer months.
