St Petersburg Architecture Introduction
St Petersburg is a major historical city in the north west of Russia. The city’s architecture is flourishing and well worth a visit with some major projects recently completed and more under construction. The city has been called the ‘Venice of the North’, due to a large amount of canals and over 400 bridges. It is the result of a major urban project begun in 1703 under Peter the Great. It was previously known as Leningrad and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Key contemporary buildings in the city which can be visited on our tours include the new Mariinsky Theatre, the Dance Palace, the Hermitage Museum, New Holland Island and the site for LeontievskyMys.
Major architects working in the city include Foster + Partners, Philippe Starck, Grimshaw, Diamond Schmitt Architects, UNStudio and RMJM Architects.
