This is the regional parliament building for Wales, built around the same time as the Scottish Parliament for a lot less money and with slightly less controversy. However the building is much simpler and not as intriguing as the Scottish assembly building.

It faces Cardiff Bay and is slightly elevated from the street. The focus of the building are the lovely wood-lined light scoops that funnel natural light down to the meeting spaces and chamber below.

The National Assembly for Wales is dominated by the over-sailing timber-clad roof. The roof is beautifully striated with wood boarding and swells up into steep forms not dissimilar to traditional Kent oasthouses.

Senedd Cymru, or the Welsh Parliament in English, is the democratically elected, devolved, unicameral legislature of Wales. It represents the interests of the people of Wales, makes laws for Wales, agrees certain taxes and scrutinises the Welsh Government.

National Welsh Assembly architect – Richard Rogers Partnership

The debating chamber in Cardiff Bay, the Senedd (Senate), was designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, based in London, UK. It was built by Taylor Woodrow, with environmental, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design by BDSP Partnership.

The Senedd building uses traditional Welsh materials, such as slate and Welsh oak, in its construction, and the design is based around the concepts of openness and transparency. The timber ceiling and centre funnel, manufactured and installed by BCL Timber Projects (sub-contracted by Taylor Woodrow) is made from Canadian sourced Western Red Cedar.
