Renowned Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, FAIA, RIBA, passed away in May 2019 at the age of 102, leaving behind one of the most influential architectural legacies of the modern era.
Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1917 and raised in Hong Kong and Shanghai, Pei moved to the United States at the age of 17 to study architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later continued his education at Harvard University, where he studied under Walter Gropius, the pioneering modernist and founder of the Bauhaus, whose teachings profoundly shaped Pei’s architectural philosophy.
Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Pei became internationally celebrated for his refined modernist approach, characterised by geometric clarity, precision, and the masterful use of light. His most iconic works include the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.—projects that have become enduring landmarks of contemporary architecture.
In recognition of his exceptional contribution to the built environment, Pei was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, honouring a body of work that continues to influence generations of architects around the world.
