Islington is a gritty inner-city suburb of Newcastle, traditionally working class, which is experiencing demographic change as young families move into the area. The site is located 30m from a fortified motorcycle gang clubhouse, and has a site area of only 283m².

Located on the North Shore of Sydney where the vegetation still prevails over the human footprint, Northbridge House balances the use of contemporary industrial materials within the surrounding Australian bush context.

In meeting the client’s ambitious brief it was essential to ensure that sustainability was at the core of the design from the outset, despite site restrictions which demanded out of the box solutions to meet performance goals.

The old cowshed in Glebe was a surprising find; a rare opportunity to preserve some of the character and charm of this eclectic neighbourhood and one we encouraged our clients to seize when they sought our advice on purchasing the property.

Located on the edge of the coastal escarpment south of Sydney, the site enjoys beautiful views of rolling green hills and a distant panorama to the sea. The clients brief sought a new country residence with private guest accommodation and large entertaining areas.

The brief: maintain and preserve the lovely big rooms at the front of the house, while radically transforming the kitchen and bathroom at the back into a wonderful contemporary space. Seamlessly blend inside and outside living spaces.
