London Bridge 800 Competition – Exhibition of All Entries

An exhibition displaying all 73 entries to the recently concluded London Bridge Ideas competition is to take place. The exhibition will be the first opportunity to see all of the entries to this competition which, following its launch in May this year, attracted submissions from architects all over the world.

The exhibition will take place at St Mary-at-Hill Church, Lovat Lane (off Eastcheap) London, from Wednesday 16th to Tuesday 22nd September 2009. The exhibition will be open from lunchtime on the 16th and then daily between 10.00 to 5.00pm, with the Saturday and Sunday (19th & 20th) coinciding with London’s Open House Programme.

Organised on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA), a Livery Company of the City of London, the competition marked the 800th anniversary of the opening of the first London Bridge in 1209AD. The competition invited today’s designers to imagine a new version of the inhabited bridge.

Laurie Chetwood’s winning design was described by the judges as ‘wildly imaginative’.

David Cole-Adams, Clerk to the WCCA said “The Company of Chartered Architects have been delighted with the response to the Competition and the fact that a number of entrants had told them that it had been enormous fun taking part in a short, sharp, ideas competition. Perhaps, before Boris Johnson holds his competition for an inhabited bridge further downstream, he might wish to look at the entries and take inspiration from the quality of the ideas raised through this competition. The exhibition in September gives the public the opportunity to see architects at their creative best without being threatened by the possibility that they will have to live with the results!”.

London Bridge 800 : Design an Inhabited Bridge Competition – Winners

The winners of the London Bridge 800 Ideas Competition were selected at as assessment this week. They are:

1st Prize – Laurie Chetwood, Chetwoods, London
2nd Prize – Lawrence Friesen, GenGeo, Ilona Hay, London
3rd Prize – Ryszard Rychlicki, student, Poznan, Poland

Organised on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA), a Livery Company of the City of London, the competition marks the 800th anniversary of the opening of the first London Bridge in 1209AD. The competition invited today’s designers to imagine a new version of the inhabited bridge.

The competition received an exceptional response with a total of 73 entries received from architects and students of architecture from all over the world. Submissions came from the UK, Europe and as far afield as the USA, Argentina, China, Hong Kong and South Africa.

The judging panel, which included Richard Saxon CBE, journalist Peter Murray, Colette O’Shea of Land Securities, and Ian Head, Master of the WCCA, described Laurie Chetwood’s scheme as ‘beautifully presented, wildly imaginative and a unanimous first choice’.

Winning and selected designs are being exhibited at the 800th Anniversary Fair of London Bridge on Saturday 11 July, with prizes presented by The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of London. The bridge will be closed to traffic from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The entries will also be publicised as part of the anniversary celebrations and will feature on www.architecture.com/competitions from next week.
