Bond Bryan Architects has been appointed by Sheffield Hallam University to design its new £25 million, 9,500sqm new building for the Faculty of Development & Society within the city’s Cultural Industries Quarter (CIQ). The building design features semitransparent walls so it will meet the university’s brief of becoming, literally, a beacon for the city.

Alex Pettifer, Director of Estates for Sheffield Hallam University says:
“Bond Bryan was selected following a formal EU tender process and national design competition. 109 other architecture firms applied to be considered for the commission including a number of leading international practises. We managed to reduce this to 43 and finally 10 who were all invited to submit tenders. Numerous practises were interviewed in a two stage process through which Bond Bryan became the architect of choice to all of us involved within the University.

They captured the imagination of all the interview panel through their careful and deliberate approach to meeting our brief. It is a tremendous achievement on their part and I look forward to working with them over coming months and finally watching the building developed to add the landmark touch to our landscape I know it will”.

Bond Bryan associate Matt Hutton says: “The need for the building to become a landmark within the city led us to developing a vibrant design concept that will radiate across the cityscape. Using translucent wall elements means that the building will shine and be seen across the city’s night skyline. “English Heritage is very interested in how we deal with a site sitting within the CIQ and adjacent the Grade II* listed Butcher Works building.

“We have designed-in a trace of the existing Brown Lane across the middle of the building, using it as the orientation device of the scheme and making it the social/learning heart of the building. The idea is that collaborative work and learning will function within a social/learning zone, blurring the boundaries between formal and informal learning.

“Two flexible teaching blocks are positioned either side at high level, opening out to showcase the educational and social facilities at ground level.

“The building also features a top floor multi-use roof space incorporating the jagged ‘saw tooth’ look of former factory roofs, to reflect the historical significance of the site, and connected roof gardens.”

The building will be completed in 2012.
