baumschlager eberle are going to build in Frankfurt. The baumschlager eberle office in Berlin has won the realization competition staged by Allianz Real Estate in cooperation with the city of Frankfurt to elicit a design for the site at Opernplatz 2 in Frankfurt.

The participants were required to replace the existing business premises erected in the 1950s by a new building with a similar format and programme. 2,200 sq m of retail space and 9,000 sq m of high-quality office space are to be distributed over six floors up to the seventh storey.

In their scheme the architects took due account of the materials of the vernacular architecture and selected the typical local light-coloured sandstone for the design of the classical punctuated facade.

This was the right choice in response to the materials deployed in the surrounding fabric, because it was above all the “careful blending of the new building into the sensitive architectural environment, particularly the Alte Oper, which proved convincing”, the jury said in its assessment.

Allianz Real Estate will now commission baumschlager eberle with the detailed planning of the building. This will be followed in 2017 by the final design stage and submission of the building application. Allianz Real Estate aims to begin demolition work in 2018 and complete the new building in the spring of 2021.
