Main Hall, School of Architecture, University of Liverpool
Monday – Friday 8:30 – 17:30 FREE ENTRY

On the 7th February at 5.00 pm Illuminating through Ceramics will be inaugurated with a lecture by Alexis Harrison, Senior Designer | Materials + Making at ARUP London

Prototype of performative façade by Adam John, James Fosbrook and Oliver O’Niell. The glazed façades are backed by an array of actuated solar shading devices that respond to both occupants and environment. The responsive performative ceramic surface controls light and the dynamic nature of the surface produces a wide range of lighting patterns:

Illuminating through Ceramics is the inspiring result of an academic research project launched in 2011 by Tile of Spain, the voice of the Spanish tile industry, in partnership with the University of Liverpool School of Architecture, examining the sustainable properties of tiles and aiming to push the boundaries of ceramic application. The research programme at the University of Liverpool forms part of the Network of Ceramic Tile Studies Departments sponsored by Tile of Spain around the world.

Illuminating through Ceramics showcases the work of MArch students in developing projects to explore our growing preference for natural lighting sources, through a range of materials and technical solutions, and with a special focus on ceramic facades. Thirteen student proposals and five full-scale prototypes, displayed within a light-immersing scenario, propose methods by which ceramics could be transformed into a dynamic interface that transports daylight throughout a building’s ‘skin.’ The ceramics production has been developed in collaboration with artists Amanda Wanner, Jenny Beavan and Wendy Lawrence.

“So far, the use of ceramics in contemporary facades offers an interesting combination of thermo-acoustic control and aesthetic properties, but very little has been explored in terms of the potential to maximise the benefits of sunlight. Particularly, contemporary proposals of ceramic lattice walls tend to explore the combination of the visual effects of patterns (colour and geometry) and privacy, but very rarely investigate the optimisation of daylight distribution,” says the programme leader Rosa Urbano, who won the Tile of Spain Award for a Degree Project, as a student in 2004.

Tesselating screen by Alastair Wake, Oliver Clucas, Robert Vasili. This ceramic curtain gives the building’s occupants control over the light entering the space and is also intended as a screen for digital projections when it is fully tessellated:

About Rosa Urbano
Prior to joining the University of Liverpool in 2010, Rosa Urbano was a researcher at the MIT Daylighting Laboratory (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2008-10) working on D-LITE (Database of Light-Interacting Technologies for Architectural Envelopes) and the design and development of Outside In/Inside Out, an Exhibition of these technologies in collaboration with the MIT Museum.

Other positions include the Fondation Le Corbusier (Paris, 2007-09) studying the role of Le Corbusier’s environmental control proposals in the evolution of the glass façade and the Fundacion Rafael Escola R&D Deparment, (Madrid, 2003-06) developing the Photoconductive Envelope, a prototype for a light-transporting double-glass façade. Urbano received her professional degree in architecture (B.Arch and M.Arch II) and her PhD degree from the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and a Master in Design Studies (MDesS) from Harvard University-Graduate School of Design, where Tile of Spain also sponsor a student programme.

Urbano is also currently working on publications related to the integration of sustainable technology in the contemporary architectural envelope, and the education of design sustainability.

About Tile of Spain’s Network of Ceramic Tile Studies Departments
A key focus of activity for the Tile of Spain communication programme is educating the next generation of architects about ceramic tiles and their applications. Since 2004, the association has set up a series of Ceramic Tile studies departments at schools of architecture in Spain and abroad. Apart from the University of Liverpool, Tile of Spain also collaborates with the Universities of Darmstadt in Germany and The Harvard University (GSD) in the U.S., as well as the leading architectural schools in Barcelona, Alicante Valencia, Madrid and Castellon. Each year the Tile of Spain Awards for Interior Design and Architecture also honour student projects in order to disseminate knowledge and promote the use of Spanish ceramics among young architects around the world.
