Madrid, 4 October 2016. The exhibition Cruz y Ortiz 1/200…1/2000 held at Museo ICO
from today through to 22 January 2017 provides an overview of over forty years of the
professional careers of architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz.

Cruz y Ortiz 1/200 1/2000 Exhibition

Among the works included in the Cruz y Ortiz 1/200…1/2000 exhibition are the Train
Station of Santa Justa dating back to 1992 and more recent projects such as the
extension of the Rijksmuseum, one of Europe’s most important museums, inviting the
spectator to reflect on museum architecture and the institution of the museum itself.

“The main objective of Museo ICO is the dissemination of the best contemporary
architecture, both Spanish and international. This year we have travelled from Olot to
Seville to provide a broader perspective of our architecture. Thus, after RCR
Arquitectes, it is an honour to now have Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz.”, says Mónica
de Linos, Director of the ICO Foundation. “Their architecture is marked by rigour,
sobriety and a concern for the constructive process, features which render their work
worthy of a close look”, concludes de Linos.

The Museo ICO devotes special attention to the project involving one of the most
emblematic sports facilities in Madrid: the new stadium of the Atlético de Madrid
which will be inaugurated next August as the headquarters of this Madrid soccer
club. Since its initial design as an athletics stadium for the Community of Madrid until
this soccer club plays its first match, over thirty years will have elapsed, which makes it
the work with the longest period of execution in the studio.

Along with these works are another 50 projects, all explained through sketches and
models, executed by Cruz y Ortiz since 1974, both those that were built – which is the
case of most of them – and those that remained at the project stage due to not having
been selected in the many national and international tenders in which the studio has
taken part.

The exhibition boasts great unity. The manner of display on identical tables, all lit in the
same way, set in transformed exhibition rooms at the Museo ICO are all geared to
achieve this unifying purpose. “We do not doubt the fascination that life–size
reproductions holds for those who look at them”, says Antonio Ortiz. “We have
attempted to achieve this somewhat via the many models displayed and highlighted in
the very title of the exhibition. We have tried to provide a solution to something
which all architects agree with: an exhibition of architecture is not easy to do”. On the
other hand he adds: “Architects are well acquainted with the transition that takes place
when gradually larger scales are used. One starts from an often intuitive beginning until
the precision and accuracy required by a technical document is achieved”.

Cruz y Ortiz 1/200 1/2000 Exhibition

The museum has been divided into three exhibition spaces and two projection areas.
Each space has long tables on which the information on each project is displayed. The
tables, as well as organising the visit, divide the exhibition Cruz y Ortiz 1/200…1/2000:
into six thematic areas: essential projects, the new Atlético de Madrid stadium,
significant projects, curved geometry projects, projects with a predominance of
interior spaces and projects with split geometries.

Four photographs by José Manuel Ballester, National Photography Prize 2010,
displayed in strategic locations, add grandeur and beauty to the exhibition. “The
collaboration of José Manuel Ballester, through five of his photographs, must be
understood as a gesture of generosity and friendship on his part, by accepting a
secondary role which is not usual for him. These large format photos highlight, without
illustrating, certain points of the exhibition”, adds Antonio Ortiz.

Cruz y Ortiz 1/200 1/2000 Exhibition

This is an exhibition understood by Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos as an ongoing project: “six
years ago we held our first exhibitions – which we called “Synthesis Architecture” –
where we also used models to illustrate what we have just explained. This exhibition
would be, therefore, an intensified version of the previous ones. And its title – more
aseptic and less pretentious, 1/200…1/2000– is the acknowledgement of the
undeniable capacity of suggestion of the smaller scale.

Professional history of Cruz y Ortiz

Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos is an architects’ studio based in Seville, although it also has offices in
Madrid and Amsterdam. Its professional activity includes many different types of projects, both
large and small scale, from sports to cultural facilities, including offices and various museums
and educational centres. Although its professional activity began in Andalusia and Madrid, it
became one of the first Spanish studios to work in Europe, specifically in the Netherlands
(1994) and Switzerland (1998). From the start the architects have combined their professional
and academic activities, giving classes in universities such as Harvard, Columbia or Cornell in
the United States or, in Europe, at the École Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne (EPFL),
Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zürich, in Switzerland and the faculties of
architecture of the universities of Seville or Navarre.

THE MUSEO ICO

The Museo ICO was inaugurated on 28 March 1996, being used initially to exhibit the art
collections of the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) under the management of the Fundación
ICO.

Sponsored by: With the collaboration of:

The collections are divided into three categories: Contemporary Spanish painting, modern
sculpture and drawings, and the Suite Vollard by Pablo Picasso. The early years were mainly
dedicated to disseminating the collections and extending knowledge of the artists represented in
them.

Cruz y Ortiz 1/200 1/2000 Exhibition

At present, the ICO Collections have become an exceptional vehicle for the dissemination of
Spanish art from the past century. This is shown by the active loan policy developed with a
number of Spanish and foreign institutions.

Since 2012, the Fundación ICO has designed a new exhibition strategy for the Museo ICO that
focuses on architecture and urbanism in three areas:

 The role of architecture in light of the great issues and challenges of present-day society.
 Architecture and urbanism from the standpoint of photography.
 The great individuals, schools and currents in contemporary architecture.

With each exhibition, the Fundación ICO organises a series of educational activities with the
goal of bringing art and architecture within the grasp of visitors. These activities include guided
tours, children’s workshops and conferences. The Museo ICO is an accessible, open and
inclusive venue for all. Through innovation, our educational activities adapt to the special needs
of the public.
