Crossing the Threshold of architecture
Architecture pop-up at myhotel, Brighton, during Love Architecture Festival 2012
The car park of myhotel, Brighton, is being taken over by Threshold, an architecture pop-up gallery opening during Love Architecture Festival, from 20 – 24 Jun 2012.
Threshold aims to show to members of the public how architects and creative professionals can adapt, reuse, transform and re-invent the spaces around us, presenting an exhibition and programme of public events on the theme of inhabiting under-used spaces.
The five day programme will include installations from local architectural practices and artists, as well as exhibitions, workshops, films, talks and events all inspired by the theme. Highlights include a pecha kucha with a variety of speakers from across the built environment; an interactive map of unused spaces in the city from practice CDMS Partners; a home in a parking bay from Yelo Architects; a vintage caravan from Chalk Architecture; a sound map of memories of the building from artist Wendy Ann Greenhalgh; and a panel debate on unused space and housing delivery in the city.
Threshold is led by RIBA Sussex Branch with a:b:i:r architects, Chalk Architecture, architectural photographer Jim Stephenson and arts consultant and curator Cara Courage and is generously supported by myhotel Brighton by the donation of its car park space and Pushstudios with its support of materials for the dressing of the space.
Olli Blair of a:b:i:r architects and Chair of RIBA Sussex Branch, comments: ‘This is a great opportunity for the public to literally cross the threshold of myhotel and to come into a space that is rarely seen, and to cross the threshold of architectural practice and get them talking to architects and each other about the built environment and issues that matter to them in Brighton and Hove.’
CEO and Founder of myhotels group Andy Thrasyvoulou comments: ‘As an architect and admirer of innovative design I am very excited about this project from Threshold. I feel that architecture and design are no longer unaffordable luxuries, but instead now accessible and expected. myhotel Brighton’s lobby, bar and guestrooms were designed around the human element – how people respond to space is crucial to any great design aesthetic. It’s fantastic to be supporting this dynamic and fresh approach to architecture.’
Threshold will be open daily from 11 am, 20 to 24 June, with a programme of daytime and evening events and exhibition until 9 pm. Entrance will be via the myhotel car park slope on Jubilee Street.
