Hinged masonry wall with projecting bricks forms new entrance to refurbished Arts and Crafts House in Hampshire.
Award-winning design practice Perring Architecture and Design have remodelled and extended a 1930’s Arts and Crafts house situated on the edge of the New Forest National Park.

The building was stripped back to its bare shell in order to comprehensively upgrade its thermal characteristics and a series of new building elements added which seek to enrich and provide an honest accompaniment to the materiality of the original property. The visual strength and solidity of the masonry wall to the new entrance acts to reinforce the qualities evident in the expressive brickwork detailing of the Arts and Crafts Movement, while in practical terms simply defining a new entrance lobby which offers oblique framed views towards an existing Japanese flowering cherry tree set within the garden.

The sculptural ‘plastic’ qualities of brickwork are expressed here in response to the necessary angled geometry dictated by the site conditions. The resulting ‘hinged’ masonry wall exhibits a satisfying authenticity where bricks remain aligned to axis but step backwards to achieve the required cranked wall condition. The consequential projecting brickwork modulation captures the delightful play of morning sunlight and shadow on the entrance screening wall.
The elevation is further articulated by the deeply recessed entrance door and glazed side panel with precast concrete lintel above. Within the new entrance lobby, a full height glazed screen affords visitors their first glimpse of the formal landscaped garden, previously denied by the screening wall. Stack bonded brick paviors to the floor and external grade rendered walls flow continuously from inside to outside and reinforce the character of this transitional buffer space.
