Dublin’s Tech Growth Leads to Modern Architecture Masterpieces

Dublin is blazing a trail on the international housing market, with an influx of international companies setting up shop, movement out of the UK from an impending BREXIT and houses not able to be built quickly enough to keep up.

Becoming more commonly known as the Silicon Valley of the EU, Dublin is trendy, technology focused and on the forefront of modern architecture.

Dublin’s architecture is exciting and innovative. Local architects are design visionaries, bringing a new look to historical buildings and popular residential styles.

We’ve selected a few of our favourite residential architectural projects in Dublin:

Goulding Summer House

The Goulding Summer House is an iconic modernist retreat. Sir Basil Goulding constructed the home, and it still maintains its homage to nature. At 142 sq.m, the dwelling features a three-bay cantilever over the river. The jutting cantilever has beam structures and steel columns for support. Goulding built the feature so he could preserve his beautiful gardens underneath.

The home is on a preservation list, and Scott Tallon Walker Architects restored the house inside and out. The home has large sun-drenched windows. Vertical steel beams mix with warm wood tones.

The interior is also fashioned in nature. The aesthetic is Mid-Century Modern, with soft touches of wood panelling throughout. The home also embraces holistic elements.

Spencer Dock Apartments

Scott Tallon Walker Architects re-imagined urban redevelopment and design. The Spencer Dock Apartments portray a modern, cosy, and chic aesthetic. The apartments are in-between Spencer Dock and Royal Canal waterway.

The exterior takes on an industrial vibe. There are stone façade panels, exposed metal channels, aluminum and timber composite windows, glass, and steel/timber balconies.

Inside, you’ll find soft tones and integrated technology. Floor-to-ceiling windows have glazing to increase energy efficiency. Each apartment is flooded with natural light, showcasing ivory tones and warm wood.

Distinguished city living requires green, outdoor spaces and Spencer Dock’s features well-planned balconies, courtyards, and roof terraces.

Coastal Dublin House

There’s nothing more traditional than a coastal cottage along Dublin’s shoreline. Designer Arigho Larmour Wheeler modernised and extended a 1950’s cottage in Dalkey.

The result is a flawless blend of modern and vintage. The exterior addition features a zinc pyramidal roof. The roof, windows, and skylights have insulation for thermal efficiency. The large windows offer extensive views of Dalkey Island.

The interior is stunning. Wheeler used limited materials to retain the cottage’s original charm and character. Warm wood flooring mixes with modern concrete floors and stainless steel countertops.

Vaulted ceilings give the small home lots of light and space. Soft white colours merge seamlessly with original wood features and blend the indoors with the outdoor coastal setting.

Dublin architecture is about showcasing the original details and modernising them through the addition of modern materials such as glass, steel, concrete and zinc.  This modernisation pays homage to the original structure, the surrounding landscape and adding eco elements through sustainable materials & ensuring energy efficiency.

From a city rich in history, the architects that work within it are careful to preserve and enhance the structures, blending the built environment with the natural.
