Capping the six-month urban ideas competition, Madrid-based design group PKMN Architectures won the People’s Choice Award, and a $40,000 cash prize, with an “Olympic Games to Urban Games” concept.

With a nod to Salt Lake City’s 2002 Olympic Legacy, the “Olympic Games to Urban Games” project relies on citizenship empowerment to launch real life into the spaces between blocks 69 & 70. The Games are designed as processes that take into account all the parameters that configure urban dynamics through human interaction, and educational, emotional and communitarian strategies to make this cultural nucleus a key aspect of a lively Salt Lake City.

A nine-member jury honored Salt Lake City–based Urban Art Lab’s “Urban Arts Lab” and Philadelphia-based Square One Studio’s “The Inner Circuit” with the two coveted Jury Awards. Both groups also received a $40,000 cash prize.

“Urban Art Lab” Salt Lake City is an urban cluster that consists of installations, art interventions and new public spaces within the blocks 69/70 and beyond. Publicly driven Guerilla installations, Art Containers, events, installations and activities take over abandoned and underutilized spaces and transforms them into usable public spaces to improve the quality of downtown.

Interactive light installations catalyze a new performing arts district by introducing spectacle and intimacy into the interior spaces of blocks sixty-nine and seventy. “The Inner Circuit” imagines the potential outcomes of these flexible installations – as alleyways, lots, and garages become shared public galleries, and combine to link new cultural destinations.

“The work of the finalists in the SixtyNine Seventy competition reflects some truly innovative and inspired visioning for how to activate downtown public spaces,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. “I’m excited to see these ideas evolve along with the myriad of public and private projects that are continuing to enrich and invigorate our central business district.”

In addition to the two Jury Award winning designs, the jury also honored the following teams with an Honorable Mention designation:

“Multi-Grid” by BAAM Urbanism (Cambridge, MA)
“Roofscape-Escape” by AC Design Team (Copenhagen, Denmark)
“Transient Streetscape” by PAW Design Team (Kansas City, MO)

More than 200 architects and designers from 48 countries, and across the U.S. submitted their ideas for making two blocks – blocks sixty-nine and seventy – in the center of downtown Salt Lake a cultural hub to rival any city in America. A nine-member jury selected 15 semifinalists, including the two Jury Award winners, while the People’s Choice Award was selected by more than 22,000 online voters who visited and viewed the entries at www.sixtynineseventy.com from May 10th – 31st.

Following the Spaces Between: An Urban Ideas Competition, the SixtyNine Seventy project will focus on the development of a public/private partnership to help support the capital costs of arts projects in the cultural core of the area with specific attention to programs on these two blocks. Ideally, this would be achieved through a private trust or banking initiative similar to many across the nation that have been established to sustain the arts.

SixtyNine-Seventy, The Spaces Between: An Urban Ideas Competition

What it is:
SixtyNine Seventy invites design teams from around the world to re-envision the circulation areas and passages of two blocks in Salt Lake City’s downtown. The entrants will prepare comprehensive ideas for these in-between spaces, developing them into the connective tissue linking the area’s cultural amenities.

Why we need it:
Salt Lake City boasts a stunning natural setting, numerous cultural amenities, a unique history, a vibrant retail core, and a thriving and diverse business community. Currently, it lacks connection between many of these elements. The design competition seeks to harness ideas from around the world that will activate the spaces between with creativity deeply rooted in the city’s rich context.

We hope new ideas will act as a catalyst for design-led growth downtown, helping redefine blocks sixty-nine and seventy, and the evolution of Salt Lake City as a whole. We want the fabric, textures, and essence of this city to create an energy that gives back to all who engage it.

How it works:
