Construction has started on a new headquarters for Chinese fashion group Xinhee.

It will house the offices of Xinhee and its six subsidiary brands in the coastal Chinese city Xiamen.

The building design is metaphorical, which is typical for the Far East. Six petals (wings) representing the six brands fan out around an atrium.

The architecture is inspired by the human body. The building has an internal skeleton wrapped with a translucent external skin.

MAD founder architect Ma Yansong said he would like the Xinhee Design Center building to explore the similarities between fashion and architecture.

“We envision it as a building with skin and bones,” he explained. “The correspondence of clothing and architecture is they both explore the relationship between the interior and the exterior.”

Xiamen is a port city on China’s southeast coast, across a strait from Taiwan.

The 61,000-sqm structure will feature a central atrium and six projecting wings, forming a “star-shaped layout that formalises a solid ‘bone’ structure frame” according to MAD.

The translucent PTFE building skin will allow light to percolate deep into the offices. The sun-shading skin will make the eight-storey building look “elegant and floating” according to Ma Yansong.

A translucent coating will be applied to the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) skin to control the amount of light and heat that enters.

Xinhee dominates the upper end of the women’s clothing market in China, offering premium fashion via its brands Jorya, Anmani, Givh Shyh, Caroline, Aivei and QDA.

MAD’s founder Ma Yansong says the Xinhee Design Center is organised around its six brands, with a six wings or ‘petals’ spaced around a central atrium.

Each of the six wings – one for each brand – will contain a mix of open-plan offices and elevated gardens.

The central atrium will provide a meeting place for the different departments. Accessible to the public, this space will also include a bridge that doubles as a catwalk for fashion shows.

Solar panels will be installed on the roof to offer a sustainable source of energy.

MAD says the project aims to mirror the kind goods that will be created within: “both clothing and architecture explore the relationship between the interior and exterior,” says Ma Yansong.

The Xinhee Design Center building is due to complete in 2017.

Xiamen encompasses 2 main islands and a region on the mainland. Formerly known as Amoy, it was a foreign concession from 1903 to World War II.
