HARBIN INDOOR SKI RESORT- CHINA WANDA HARBIN by Patel Architecture Inc.+GDF Design associates. Harbin, which is originally a Manchu word meaning “a place for drying fishing nets”, grew from a small rural settlement on the Songhua River to become one of the largest cities in the northeast. It is known for its bitterly cold winters and is often called the “Ice City.” Harbin is notable for its beautiful ice sculptures in winter.

In the 1920s, the city was considered China’s fashion capital since new designs from Paris and Moscow reached there first before arriving in Shanghai. In 2010, Harbin was declared a UNESCO “City of Music”. History and culture of Harbin was woven together and used as the base during the initial inception of the concept, when designing this indoor ski resort for the Wanda Group. Patel and his team, studied the movement of the skiing, and was also fascinated with fluid moves on the slippery slopes.

Many of these factors influenced the design of the Harbin Ski resort, that also will accommodate the shopping mall, performing arts theaters, movie cineplex including IMAX, restaurants and many more activities. As part of the master plan, there is the theme park proposed for the summer as well as winter fun activities. An indoor ski slope with high, medium and low of 6 ski, drop of more than 100 meters, can accommodate 1,500 people skiing, will be one of the world’s largest indoor ski slope. In addition, an indoor ice-skating rink is designed based on the world-class competition standard.
