Since 2010, the two practices have collaborated on projects in Chile, primarily drawing on the skills, expertise and experience of Broadway Malyan’s long-established team in Madrid, Spain.
The move is part of Broadway Malyan’s strategy to grow its business across the Latin America region, which is seeing it drawing on the cultural and language connections shared by its teams based in Madrid, Lisbon and São Paulo.
The practice opened its office in Brazil in 2011 and as part of its international growth strategy it has since opened bases in Istanbul (Turkey), Mumbai (India) and Baku (Azerbaijan).
Antonio Prado Arquitectura Commercial has a strong reputation in the Chilean retail sector, with completed and current projects across the country, and a strong client portfolio of leading retail developers and operators – including Cencosud, Ripley, Banca Ripley, GES Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Movistar and Forever 21.
The team in Chile will be headed by Broadway Malyan Director Jorge Ponce Dawson, who will continue to lead the practice’s Madrid-based team in Spain, while Antonio Prado will become Director of Architecture and lead the local team.
Jorge Ponce Dawson said: “Antonio Prado Arquitectura has a strong reputation in the national and regional retail sector, an impressive project portfolio and enviable client base. Our objective is to ensure that our combined team of world-class design experts is the partner of choice for current and new clients in Chile and Spanish-speaking Latin America, as well as the wider region, across a wide range of sectors including masterplanning and mixed use.”
Chile’s economy has recently been boosted by a surge in investment, with the country’s GDP rising 4.1 per cent from last year, and the country sets the benchmark in the development of department stores in the global retail sector.
Chile-based retail developers and operators lead the way across the Latin American region and are actively expanding their presence and exporting their retail formula – Cencosud, Mall Plaza, Corp Group, Falabella and Parque Arauco are active in Perú and Colombia, while Cencosud is also expanding its operations in Brazil and Argentina.
Broadway Malyan’s projects in Chile include the concept and schematic design for Portal Bio-Bio, a 70,000 sqm GLA commercial centre for Cencosud. With the acquisition of Antonio Prado Arquitectura Commercial, the practice’s client portfolio will be expanded with the addition of Ripley, one of Chile’s largest department store operators, Banca Ripley, GES Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Movistar and Forever 21.
Meanwhile, in Argentina, Broadway Malyan has delivered the concept design for the recently-opened extension of Las Palmas del Pilar shopping centre in Pilar, Buenos Aires, for Cencosud. It is also supporting major shopping centre extensions for Carrefour, such as Terrazas de Mayo in Malvinas Argentinas, which is currently on site.
In Perú, Broadway Malyan is supporting Real Plaza, the leading operator in the country’s retail sector, having completed the concept design of Real Plaza Huánuco, a 30,000 sqm GLA commercial centre in Huánuco. It is also currently delivering six projects, ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 sqm GLA in size, for the client, providing a full range of concept, detailed and interior design services.
Broadway Malyan is also supporting client Mall Plaza on two large commercial centres in Colombia.
Broadway Malyan opened its office in São Paulo, Brazil, on the back of projects in the country including a five star resort hotel. It has since celebrated the launch of projects including its masterplan vision for Convida Suape, a new city in Northeastern Brazil.
This year it saw the launch of Porto Atlântico, a flagship mixed-use scheme which is set to create a high-profile gateway to the redeveloped Porto Maravilha area of Rio de Janeiro, the largest revitalisation project in Brazil.
Distinguished by its global reach with 16 offices across world centres, unrivalled diversity with over 500 sector experts and distinctive client focus with over 85% income from repeat business, Broadway Malyan creates world-class and fully-integrated cities, places and buildings to unlock lasting value and deliver a ‘return on design’.
