NATURALLY COOL
Loved for its clear blue skies and sub-tropical climate Brisbane is a city the invites outdoor living. It can also be a city of soaring power bills as its occupants turn to refrigerated air to escape the at times stifling humidity, but not for the owners of this beautifully renovated Australian home.
“Rarely does the home need artificial cooling, or heating for that matter,” explains architect Dion Seminara. “Most parts of the city are blessed with cooling ocean breezes yet so few modern homes make full use of this natural asset.”
Extra wide eaves keep much of the harsh summer sun from the windows and walls whilst still allowing the home to be naturally lit, however it’s the use of louvers, shutters and sliding walls that are a key feature of this naturally ventilated home.
“The inspiration behind much of this comes from Japanese architecture,” explains Dion. “The owners often work from home so the ability to isolate areas during work hours was vital, yet those same areas can be opened up when not in use giving the home a wonderfully airy feeling of spaciousness.”
Air is able to flow almost unimpeded through much of the home, so much so that the owners claim they can hardly recall a day when they’ve need to turn their air-conditioners on.
The deck – so often a major feature of Australian homes – serves as secondary office space thanks to its tremendous aspect and controlled environment.
The owners of the home are collectors of original Australian artwork so it was important to them that the interior materials were sympathetic and complimentary. To this end England black butt flooring with brushbox paneling was used, creating the perfect environment for displaying these treasured pieces of art.
Outside alum panels and basalt stone slabs work beautifully with the natural surroundings creating a sense of connection with the landscaped gardens. But then that’s not surprising when everything about this home has been designed to work with nature.
