The winners of the 3rd International Holcim Awards competition for sustainable construction projects and visions from across Europe have been announced at a ceremony in Milan. A total of USD 300,000 was presented to ten outstanding projects submitted by architects, planners, engineers and project owners. The winning projects show the wide range of approaches in the region to sustainable construction that respond both to intensified urbanization and innovation in building materials and construction techniques.
The Holcim Awards Gold 2011 for Europe and USD 100,000 was awarded to German architects realities united for a project on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Museuminsel in the heart of Berlin. The Flussbad urban plan will remediate an area rich in cultural heritage by transforming an under-utilized arm of the River Spree into a natural 745m-long “swimming pool”. The project will form a swimming zone equivalent to 17 Olympic-sized pools – and directly improve the quality of urban life and the ecology of the waterway.
The Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction conducts the competition in five regions in parallel across the world. More than 6,000 submissions for projects located in 146 countries entered the Holcim Awards which aims to promote sustainable responses from the building and construction industry to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues.

Holcim Foundation Awards in 2011
3rd International Holcim Awards competitions attract entries for construction projects and visions to be pursued in 146 countries on all continents.
Zurich/Switzerland, April 5, 2011 – The USD 2 million Holcim Awards competitions for sustainable construction projects and visions has attracted 6,065 submissions. The number of entries and countries participating has grown strongly since the previous competition and is further evidence that sustainability has become a firmly-entrenched core topic within building and construction. Submissions will now be screened for compliance with the rules of the Holcim Awards before the evaluation by five juries of internationally-renowned architects and academics takes place.

Submissions for projects located in 146 countries show that the move towards sustainable construction is a global concern, implemented by multi-disciplinary partnerships and many international teams. The Holcim Awards competitions are conducted in parallel in five geographical regions. The greatest number of submissions were received for projects in Latin America (29%), followed by Asia Pacific (27%), Europe (25%), North America (10%) and Africa Middle East (8%). The most significant increase in participation was registered in North America (+73%), the highest number of Holcim Awards (main category) submissions was from Asia Pacific, and the largest participation in the “Next Generation” (student category) was from Latin America.
All fully-completed entries will now undergo a formal check by Berlin-based architecture and urban design consultants [phase eins]. Valid entries will then be presented to an independent jury panel in the region where the project is to be constructed (or where the project was conceptualized for the student category). Each jury will examine a broad range of between 150 and 550 detailed submissions for building and civil engineering works, landscape, urban design and infrastructure, and materials, products and construction technologies.

The Holcim Awards juries will each be hosted by a partner university of the Holcim Foundation and led by: Jürgen Mayer H, Founder and Principal, J Mayer H Architects (in region Europe); Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean, Harvard University Graduate School of Design (North America); Carolyn Aguilar-Dubose, Dean, Department of Architecture, Universidad Iberoamericana (Latin America); Hashim Sarkis, Principal, Hashim Sarkis Studios (Africa Middle East); and Wowo Ding, Dean, School of Architecture, Nanjing University (Asia Pacific).
The juries will evaluate entries using the “target issues” implemented by the Holcim Foundation which examine each project’s contribution to sustainable construction across a broad spectrum of themes including the “triple bottom line” of environmental, social, and economic performance. An additional “target issue” applies specifically to architecture and a final element recognizes the need for innovation and transferable approaches. Holcim Awards – Celebrating the best projects around the world
Winners will be informed as soon as the jury decisions are verified and the jury reports validated. The results of the regional Holcim Awards competitions will be announced at ceremonies in late 2011 in Milan, Washington DC, Buenos Aires, Casablanca and Singapore and communicated to all participants. Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction
The Holcim Awards competitions encourage architects, planners, engineers, project owners and university students to share their projects and visions that go beyond conventional notions of sustainable construction. The competition is an initiative of the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. The foundation promotes sustainable responses to the technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting building and construction. It is supported by Holcim Ltd, one of the world’s leading suppliers of cement and aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand) as well as further activities such as ready-mix concrete and asphalt including services. The Holcim Group holds majority and minority interests in around 70 countries on all continents.

Holcim Projects – reporting on progress of sustainable construction
The new Holcim Projects section of the website reports on the progress of sustainable construction projects associated with the Holcim Foundation. The updates explain how projects including prize winners in the Holcim Awards competitions – have evolved from inspired ideas into tangible flagships of sustainable construction.
The initial selection of project updates includes the opening of the “New Monte Rosa Alpine Hut” in Switzerland which began as a two-year design project for students at the ETH Zurich and captured the imagination of some 11,000 overnight visitors in its inaugural season. Further Award winning projects featured include the “California Academy of Sciences” in San Francisco, USA which won a Holcim Award in 2005 and has since become the world’s largest Platinum-level LEED certified public building – and the “Ecological Boulevard” which has been fully constructed in a new suburb of Madrid and was also exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.

From dream to reality: “Next Generation” (student category) winner, the “Coastal Fog-Harvesting Tower” in Chile aims to secure water supply for communities and agriculture – a prototype is under construction and further research will follow.
Architect Harry Gugger joins Board of the Holcim Foundation
Architect Harry Gugger has joined the Management Board of the Holcim Foundation. Harry Gugger is Full Professor of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and Principal of Harry Gugger Studio based in Basel, Switzerland. Previously, he was partner-in-charge at internationally renowned architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron in Basel.
Harry Gugger has been a member of the Technical Competence Center (TCC)of the Holcim Foundation at ETH Zurich for more than a year; was Head of the Holcim Awards jury for Europe in 2008, and shall be a member of the jury for North America in 2011. Harry Gugger replaces Marc Angélil, Dean of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), who has been a member of the both the Management Board and the TCC of the Holcim Foundation since their inception 2003.

Holcim Award for Lighthouse Tower
The Holcim Foundation, one of the premier foundations for sustainable building design and construction has honoured Atkins at an awards ceremony in Marrakech on 13th November.

Winning the “bronze award” for the iconic, 400m tall Lighthouse Tower in Dubai, judges commended Atkins for demonstrating that high-rise buildings also have significant potential to be designed and constructed to meet sustainability targets. It was one of 11 projects from the Middle East and Africa region honoured during the ceremony, all of which illustrated the broad scope for applying sustainable construction approaches to the built environment.
The Holcim Awards is an international competition of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and is conducted in parallel across five regions of the world and saw almost 5,000 projects from 90 countries entered the competition.
The Marrakech event was the fourth of five ceremonies featuring a diverse and international group of project teams, all demonstrating that sustainable construction is truly of global concern. The results for Europe, North America and Latin America have also been announced, and the results for Asia Pacific are still to be celebrated in New Delhi.
Gold, silver and bronze prize winners from each region automatically qualify for the global Holcim Awards competition. The projects will be further evaluated by a global jury and the winners proclaimed in Switzerland in 2009.
