AR House Awards 2021 Shortlist in 2021

We are delighted to announce the 15-strong shortlist for the AR House awards 2021. The private house occupies a unique position in both the history of architecture and human imagination. Beyond its core function of shelter, it is an object of fantasy, a source of delight, a talisman and a testing ground.

The 2021 shortlist

– Ballen House in Norway by LCLA office
– Beaconsfield House in Fremantle in Australia by Simon Pendal Architect
– El Garaje in Madrid in Spain by NOMOS
– Hloduberg artist studio in Dalabyggo in Iceland by Studio Bua
– House Hamburgö in Boohuslan in Sweden by Manthey Kula
– House in Kanazawa in Japan by Shota Nakanishi Architects
– House on a Slope in Switzerland by Karamuk Kuo
– LEAP 19C in Japan by KANIUE Architects
– Light-filled Stair Hall in Japan by KIRI Architects
– Marfa Suite in the US by D U S T
– Middleton Park Gate Lodge, Ireland in Ireland by TAKA Architects
– Mountain View in the UK by CAN
– Rain Harvest Home in the US by Robert Hutchison Architecture and JSa Arquitectura
– Walk / House in Thailand by EKAR
– Weekend house on Salamis Island in Greece by AREA Architecture Research Athens

This year’s judging panel includes three previous AR House finalists:

– Fernanda Canales, architect, designer, critic, and curator, and commended in the AR House awards 2018 for Casa Bruma in Mexico, designed with Claudia Rodríguez
– Tina Gregorič, co-founder of Dekleva Gregorič Architects, and commended in the AR House awards 2015 for Compact Karst House in Vrhovlje, Slovenia
– David Leech, founder of David Leech Architects, and highly commended in the AR House awards 2019 for Hollybrook Grove in Dublin, Ireland

Entries were considered by the judges, who were looking for ingenious and pioneering houses that seek to push the type forward. The panel noted that they were looking for projects that push the boundaries of what a home is and could serve as model or inspiration for other houses. They were interested in houses that have come from ordinary beginnings but have become something special.

The winner and commended projects will be announced online at the beginning of December and published in the December 2021/January 2022 issue of The Architectural Review.
