HASSELL is delighted to announce that one40william has been awarded the George Temple Poole award at the 2011 WA Australian Institute of Architects Awards, the WA Chapter’s highest honour for the year’s overall winning architectural project.
one40william is one of Perth’s most significant and influential new buildings, enlivening the city’s retail centre and providing an innovative environmental response to Perth’s unique climatic conditions. The building has been designed from the inside out and strives to engage people who work within, visit or simply pass by.

“HASSELL is thrilled to be able to build upon our previous success of the Perth underground station and now deliver this complex program which successfully reinvigorates such a key urban site, while setting new benchmarks for sustainability, heritage reuse and workplace environment,” said Peter Lee, HASSELL Project Director.
In determining the George Temple Poole Award, the AIA jury said: “The design team, contractor and developer have worked as an integrated team to resolve the complex construction challenges associated with building over an operating train station to incorporate heritage building fabric into the works and to deliver a high-quality addition to the urban grain of Perth’s central retail and business district.
The jury believes that this project should be seen by planning authorities, government agencies, developers and the community generally as evidence of the benefits that can be achieved by an enlightened briefing and procurement model, by an adventurous and talented design team, and by a collaborative delivery process.”
one40william also won the Ross Chisholm Award for Commercial Architecture and the John Septimus Roe Award for Urban Design.
In addition, the HASSELL-designed Main Roads Great Southern Regional Complex in Albany was awarded the Architecture Award for Sustainable Architecture.

one40william is set to become one of the most significant and influential construction projects in Perth, setting a benchmark in environmental design and bringing new life to Perth’s retail centre.
The development, which comprises 36,000 square metres of commercial office and 6,000 square metres of retail, food and entertainment tenancies, towers above the new underground railway platforms on William Street, revitalising this landmark site. Also incorporated into the design are several heritage buildings, including the Wellington Building, former Globe Hotel and Baird’s Building, which will all be fully restored.
The A$215 million project recently achieved a 5 Star Green Star Office Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, meeting Cbus Property’s requirements for the development, and also those of their major state government tenant. This iconic development will set new standards for tenant comfort and corporate social responsibility, and is also aiming upon completion for a 5 Star Green Star As Built rating.
