Daphne House, Australia
This Queenslander home in Australia recently underwent a thoughtful and transformative renovation to address the missteps of a prior 2000s remodel. The earlier renovation had raised the house and enclosed the ground floor with a garage and bedrooms. However, the addition of two faux traditional gables resulted in an awkward façade with five gables, undermining the home’s original charm. Inside, poor natural light and a weak connection to the backyard created significant functional and aesthetic challenges.
The new owners, a young family, sought to improve these shortcomings by relocating the living spaces and kitchen to the ground floor, creating a better flow to the garden. They also wanted to introduce a pool and reconfigure the upper level to create a private master retreat.
The design solution introduced a large void at the rear of the home, significantly enhancing the natural light on both levels. This void became a central feature, with a suspended concrete planter bed adding texture and character by casting dappled shadows throughout the day, transforming the once dark interiors into warm, light-filled spaces.
A major issue with the previous renovation was the front yard, which had been retained at street level, blocking northern light from entering the ground floor. To address this, the site was excavated and terraced, opening up the front entryway and allowing sunlight to flood the interior. The removal of the faux gables on the facade also played a key role in restoring the house’s original Queenslander charm, returning it to its authentic and timeless character.
The project, completed in 2023, not only rejuvenated the home’s aesthetic appeal but also improved its functionality for modern family living. With a project size of 250 m² and a site size of 810 m², this renovation seamlessly blended heritage with contemporary design, all within a budget of AUD 1.4 million.
