The new Icon Complex, part of the wider Tjuvholmen development, comprises an art museum, office building and a culture centre, all constructed on reclaimed land. The three buildings are covered by a striking double-curved roof – a design inspired by a bicycle tyre – that slopes down to touch the landscape. The roof is made up of over 2,000 unique panes of glass that allow natural light to illuminate the exhibition spaces.

A new cutting-edge architectural structure opens to the public after five years of construction work. Designed to showcase the museum’s treasures of Islamic art, the new project is located in the Visconti courtyard, at the very centre of the Louvre. Lafarge has worked in close partnership with the architects to supply the most appropriate materials for the structure.

Existing large plane trees form a remarkable framework of greenery, create a warm atmosphere, and act as natural climate regulators. The proposed scheme preserves most of them and associates them actively with the architecture. The second major factor concerns the habitability of the site, which is subject to a major constraint related to drainage.

The building is implemented to bury the court and the locker rooms. The schema allows to go through, without visual barriers, from the park to the covered platform, to the stands, and finally descending to the court.
