Alárò City by SOM Wins 2019 Architizer A+ Popular Choice Awards
The master plan was designed by SOM to strengthen Lagos’ position as the economic hub for West Africa
Alárò City Project Nigeria
SOM’s Alárò City project in Nigeria has won the Architizer A+ Popular Choice Awards in the Unbuilt Masterplan category. The winners were selected by the online voting public after a 10-day campaign garnering over 400,000 votes.
Alárò City is a mixed-income, city-scale development across 1000ha with modern employment, including industrial and logistics locations, as well as maker spaces and is complemented by offices, homes, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, entertainment & leisure uses, and 150 hectares (370 acres) of parks and open spaces. By focusing first on natural systems, SOM’s proposal creates a new mixed-use model sustainable community that protects and enhances the unique conditions of the site while enabling long-term resiliency for the future city.
“Alárò City helps strengthen Lagos’ position as the economic gateway and growth hub for West Africa by creating a model mixed-use sustainable community—a place for people to work, make, live, and learn, which aims to become an international trade destination. I am excited to see that this exemplar of sustainable design and collaboration between public and private sectors has been recognised by a wide public audience.”
– Daniel Ringelstein, Director, SOM City Design Practice.
The Architizer A+ Awards promote and celebrate the year’s best architecture and products, with a mission to nurture the appreciation of meaningful architecture in the world and champion its potential for a positive impact on everyday life. This year’s shortlist was presented online for design enthusiasts from around the globe to vote for their favourites.

Rendeavour and Lagos State Government, through their subsidiary, Northwest Quadrant Development Company (NWQDC), have conceived Alárò City as a 2,000-hectare, market-led project. NWQDC is authorized by both the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, and the Lagos State Government as an entity to develop, operate, administer and manage Alárò City.
Rendeavour is Africa’s largest new city builder, with over 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres) of city-scale developments in the growth trajectories of large cities in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, and Democratic Republic of Congo. Rendeavour is creating the living and working spaces that will help sustain and accelerate Africa’s economic growth, meet the aspirations of Africa’s burgeoning middle classes, and serve as a catalyst for further urban development.
