2015 All-Africa Games Building

One of Australia’s foremost international architecture and design firms, PTW Architects, are designing a world-class sports stadium in the Republic of the Congo with ecological features and high standard sports facilities for the 2015 All-Africa Games.

Located in central Africa, the $500 million (USD) development will contain a 60, 000 seat stadium, a 10, 000 seat indoor stadium, a 2, 000 seat aquatics centre, ancillary facilities and various outdoor venues.

PTW Architects, who were involved in the design and construction of Beijing’s Watercube for the 2008 Olympics, hopes to deliver yet another globally recognisable icon. One of the project objectives is to improve overall impression and image of the city’s buildings, informed by the firm’s international design experience.

The PTW Brazzaville Design Team says the idea for the “gallant gold design” of the Stadium was inspired by the “Sun’s rays, as a symbolic interpretation of the longevity of the games and the excitement and colour that competition brings to the African countries participating in the event.”

Motivated by a desire to perpetuate and develop traditional African culture, PTW Architects said “Water and natural vegetation” features throughout the master plan expressed in the forecourt to these venues, symbolic of land and natural elements, creating a sense of place and identity to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the African Games in 2015.

The All-African Games are a significant sporting and cultural event for the African continent, taking place once every four years. 32 sports have been presented in the 14-year history and 53 members affiliated to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa are eligible to take part. The multi-sport event is organised by the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa with the first games being held in 1965 in Brazzaville.
