Two of the most famous designers of buildings in the last century:

Zaha Hadid Architect

Iraqi-born but established an office in Clerkenwell, London, having attended the prestigious Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture on Bedford Square.

Zaha’s Heydar Aliyev Centre building in Baku is a favourite of mine, an absolute peak building for this incredibly talented architect. The sensous and liquid-like shape is truly enticing. The flowing form smoothly emerges out of the plaza – landscape and building are one – Editor Adrian Welch:

Sadly Zaha is no longer with us but she has left an amazing legacy across the world with key buildings in Baku, Azerbaijan and in Rome, Italy.

This Canadian set up his office in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California, USA. He kickstarted his practice with a humble house for himself in Santa Monica. Using robust materials such as corrugated metal and mesh it was a popular inspiration to architecture students in the 1990s when I was attending university!

Later, larger, key works include the world-famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain; Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles; Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, France; The Vontz Center for Molecular Studies for the University of Cincinnati, Ohio; Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Washington, USA; New World Center in Miami Beach, Florida; Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Fred & Ginger aka Dancing House in Prague, Czech Republic; the Vitra Design Museum and the MARTa Herford museum in Germany; the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Canada and 8 Spruce Street in New York City.
