Purcell Miller Tritton revamps Denbighshire’s most unusual historic gardens

Denbighshire’s leading historic gardens, the Dr. Evan Pierce Memorial Gardens, in Denbigh, reopened on Thursday June 14th following a £418,000 restoration project by leading architects and historic buildings consultant Purcell Miller Tritton.

The Grade II registered historic garden was originally laid out in 1874, in recognition of Dr. Evan Pierce’s contribution to public life. Pierce was probably best known for his work during the Cholera epidemic of 1832, when 300 people (10% of the local population) died in Denbigh.

The Denbigh Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) appointed Purcell Miller Tritton in 2003 together with Landscape Architects Casella Stranger with the mission to restore the Memorial Gardens, which contain the Dr. Pierce Monument and the Golden Jubilee fountains, Grade II* and Grade II listed buildings. The gardens, half an acre in size, which have not been used by the public since 2000, were in much need of investment for repair and to ensure public safety.

Purcell Miller Tritton and the Townscape Heritage Initiative ensured that the local community and the stakeholders were involved throughout the planning stages with a series of meetings and public exhibitions for the community to comment on the future of the gardens.

“Dr Pierce’s impact on Denbigh and its people is indicated in the fact that such a major monument and garden was constructed during his lifetime,” said Matt Dyer, who was in charge of the project for Purcell Miller Tritton who went on to add, “We are thrilled with the restoration and enhancement of one of Denbighshire’s most historic gardens and major monuments. Thanks to the combined work of the whole team Denbigh Town now have magnificent gardens for the community and visitors to once more enjoy.
