SITE STRATEGY

The bridge springs from a scenic point right off Mount Faber Loop and lands on the south-west side of Telok Blangah Hill, spanning some 277 meters over the hill slopes and Henderson Road, Singapore. The chosen springing point maximizes the visual impact of the bridge over the gorge, while minimizing its length. A paved pathway will be built to bring pedestrians and cyclists from Mount Faber Loop to the springing point.

FORM

The bridge involves a natural form made of natural materials. The natural form is achieved by means of simple mathematics: the bridge is a folded three-dimensional surface created with one mathematical equation. The mathematical equation determines the form of the bridge and inflects it in all three dimensions to the extent that its surface bends, undulates and ascends by twenty-one meters in one movement. In the process it also deforms to provide adequate egress, sloping, shelter, and scenic viewing to the south for pedestrians and cyclists.

MATERIAL

The bridge is covered with Yellow Balau timber on top of a primary armature
of steel. To reinforce the perception of the natural form, every line of the original mathematical surface becomes either a solid frame engineered in steel, or a sloping timber board to tread or sit on, cycle, and enjoy.
