Building Architecture by Stonehill Taylor
Stonehill Taylor completed the architecture for the 13-story Moxy East Village, a new 286-key hotel on East 11th Street. A new urban artifact that blends seamlessly into its surrounding environment, the hotel is the gateway to New York’s instantly recognizable East Village and its unique history.
The architecture team designed Moxy East Village with influences from the surrounding neighborhood’s gritty urban aesthetic, brick walk-ups, and distinctive iron fire escapes. In this spirit, the hotel’s façade features iron-point roman brick, echoing the iconic Webster Hall music venue across 11th Street, with CorTen weathered steel elements on the street level and the top floor.
Board-formed concrete piers and walls start on the façade and up the podium, elevating the common concrete to a design element with its own character. Surrounding the venue entrance, glowing glass bricks invite guests to enter and explore, as if they were discovering a secret after-party—the type only Webster Hall VIPs frequent.
The Moxy East Village carves its public areas deep underground in a variety of interactive levels. These provide unique spaces for the arrival and check-in, the hotel bar and lounge, and several outdoor terraces. Concrete stairs lead to the dramatic triple-height Cathédrale restaurant that highlights a stunning custom installation done by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi.
Stonehill Taylor oversaw the space’s soaring 26-foot ceilings to accommodate Tresoldi’s wire mesh sculpture (titled “Fillmore,” after the nearby Fillmore East music hall) in the style of a grand domed ceiling.
The portion of the building housing the guestrooms has industrial grid windows, verticality emphasized by grouping them in two-story articulations. Queen and Queen Twin Rooms, Double/Doubles, and Quad Bunk Rooms all offer abundant natural light, with some south-facing rooms boasting views of the Freedom Tower and other downtown skyscrapers. Moxy East Village exterior walls employ extra-robust thermal insulation to meet the city’s Zone Green enhanced standards for energy efficiency.
The top floor of the building calls out the rooftop program with the same weathered steel used in the base. A rooftop bar opening in Spring 2020 will feature a retractable glass roof, allowing the bar to be used in all seasons while providing guests with unobstructed views of the encompassing neighborhood.

About Moxy East Village
Moxy East Village is located in the heart of New York’s iconic East Village, the neighborhood where rock ‘n’ roll, renegade art, LGBTQ+ activism, and generations of immigrants all merged to give birth to American counterculture. Conceived by Rockwell Group as a vertical timeline, the hotel draws inspiration from various eras in East Village history, from the earliest settlers to the punk era to today.
Moxy embraces the neighborhood’s rebellious spirit while meeting the demands of today’s travelers—all at an affordable price. Its 286 design-driven bedrooms, co-working spaces, and tech-savvy amenities, as well as lively restaurants, bars, and cultural programming, reflect the richly diverse fabric of the neighborhood.
Four new eating and drinking venues overseen by Tao Group include Cathédrale, a French-Mediterranean restaurant from Chef Jason Hall; Little Sister, an underground lounge; the all-day Alphabet Bar & Café in the lobby; and a rooftop bar opening in Spring 2020. Moxy East Village is Lightstone’s third Moxy hotel opening in New York City, following the successful launches of Moxy Times Square and Moxy Chelsea.
