The former Dacheng Flour Factory will be transformed into a multifaceted exhibition venue.

June 2015 – The 2015 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (2015 UABB), the world’s only biennale dedicated to the themes of urbanism and urbanization, will open in Shenzhen on 4 December 2015. The 2015 Biennale will take place at the former Dacheng Flour Factory in Shekou, Shenzhen, one of China’s first Special Economic Zones, while the Xipu New Residence in Longgang District will act as an affiliated venue.

Set around the central theme “Re-Living The City”, 2015 UABB will explore the reimagining, repurposing, and remaking of our existing urban spaces and architecture to improve the way people experience cities. The exhibition will be presented in five primary components: ‘Collage City 3D’, ‘Maker Maker’, ‘Pearl River Delta 2.0’, ‘Radical Urbanism’, and ‘Social City’. Each of the five components will present new and innovative ideas of how we can build upon what already exists to create a more comfortable and efficient urban environment.

This year, UABB (SZ) will be curated by four of the world’s leading architects, critics, and educators: Aaron Betsky, a critic and curator who directed the Venice International Architecture Biennale 2008 and is now Dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture; Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, who are the founders of Urban Think Tank (UTT) and together hold a Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at ETH Zürich, and Doreen Heng Liu, founder and principal of NODE Architecture and Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Drura Parrish of Parrish Holdings and MakeTime, and Droog, led by Renny Ramakers, will contribute as co-curators of the Biennale. Graphic design and exhibition design will be led by Netherlands based firm Thonik, supported by the Chinese design studio Another.

First launched in 2005 and now in its sixth edition, the forward-thinking biennale plays a key role in generating a discourse about urbanism and architecture in the global context. UABB actively intervenes in the existing urban space and architecture of Shenzhen, serving as a major driving force for the urban development of the city.

Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (UABB) is currently the only biennial exhibition in the world to be based exclusively on the set themes of urbanism and urbanization. Co-organized by the two neighboring and closely interacting cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, UABB situates itself within the regional context of the rapidly urbanizing Pearl River Delta, concerns itself with globally common urban issues, extensively communicates and interacts with the wider public, is presented using expressions of contemporary visual culture, and engages international, avant-garde dimensions as well as discourses of public interest.

UABB is a forward-thinking biennale that focuses on the conceptual issues on urbanism and architecture. With around 770 exhibits and 310 activities since the biennale launched in 2005, UABB has attracted over 860,000 visitors worldwide.

The past five editions of UABB(SZ) have investigated a range of themes including ‘Urban Village & Spontaneous City’, ‘City of Expiration and Regeneration’, ‘Public Space’, ‘Urban-rural Relationship and Agriculture’, and‘Border/Edge’. The research, ideas and discussions have made a significant impact on the global discourse on architecture and urbanism as well as on Shenzhen, a “Vanguard” city.

Aaron Betsky

Aaron Betsky is Dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin.
He is also a curator, critic, and lecturer on art, architecture and design. In 2008,
he directed the 11th Venice International Architecture Biennale, which was at the
time the highest attended such event. Between 2006 and 2014, he was Director
of the Cincinnati Art Museum, and before that was Director of the Netherlands
Architecture Institute (2001-2006) and Curator of Architecture, Design, and
Digital Projects at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1995-2001).

Trained in the humanities and then as an architect at Yale University, Betsky has
also worked as a writer and as an architectural designer for Frank Gehry and
Hodgetts & Fung Design Associates. He writes a twice-weekly blog for
architectmagazine.com, as well as articles for both professional and general
audience publications and lectures regularly around the world. He has published
over a dozen books including, most recently, his collected essays, At Home in
Sprawl. His survey of modernism in architecture and design will be published by
Actar in the fall of 2015.

Alfredo Brillembourg & Hubert Klumpner

Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner head the interdisciplinary design firm
Urban-Think Tank. Meeting as graduate students in architecture and urban
design in New York, they co-founded U-TT in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1998 to
develop prototypical interventions for informal urban environments.

In 2007,
Brillembourg and Klumpner were appointed as adjunct professors at the
Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University, where they
also co-founded the Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory (SLUM Lab).
Together, they have held a Chair of Architecture and Urban Design at the Swiss
Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, since 2010. As co-principals
of U-TT, Brillembourg and Klumpner have received the 2010 Ralph Erskine
Award, the 2011 Holcim Gold Award for Latin America, and the 2012 Holcim
Global Silver Award for innovative contributions to ecological and social design
practices.

They have published the books Informal City: Caracas Case and Torre
David: Informal Vertical Communities, and were part of the team awarded the
Golden Lion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di
Venezia for the installation Torre David/Gran Horizonte. Urban-Think Tank’s most
notable built work includes the Metro Cable and a series of ‘Vertical Gyms’ in
Caracas. Additional projects are currently underway in São Paulo, Barranquilla,
and Cape Town.

Doreen Heng Liu

Doreen Heng LIU, born in Guangzhou, is an architect practicing in China. She
received her Masters in Architecture from UC Berkeley and Doctorate of Design
at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her research focuses on contemporary
urbanism and architecture in the Pearl River Delta, and the specific impact of
urbanization on design and practice in China today.

She established her own design practice NODE (Nansha Original Design) in
Hong Kong and Nansha, Guangzhou in 2004, and opened another studio in
Shenzhen in 2009. Her built architectural works include the Value Factory – Main
Entrance & Warehouse renovation – in the 2013 Biennial; the Nansha Science
Museum and Nansha Bookstore, Guangzhou Times Museum; the Lianzhou Int’l
Photography Festival Permanent Site.

Her design works have been widely
published in many international & local professional magazines including
Architectural Record, Domus, Abitare, and Volume. She and her studio have also
participated in various architectural and art exhibitions including Biennale’s in
Shanghai, Guangzhou, Venice and Rotterdam.

In 2012, NODE was shortlisted,
as one of five international emerging architects, for the Audi Urban Future
Initiative (AUFI) awards. Doreen has been leading studios at the School of
Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since September 2008, and
was appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor in 2011. In 2014, Doreen was
nominated as Curator for the Hong Kong Pavilion of the 14th International
Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.
