Based in London and Leeds, Farrell & Clark have a reputation for delivering quality architecture in the public and commercial sectors. Strong and lasting business partnerships are at the heart of their success, none more so than those forged with Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership over a period of 20 years.

The London based team started their journey into retail in the 1980’s when they were contracted by Kimberley Developments Plc to work on a shell project for Waitrose. Over the years, the office has worked on more than 15 Waitrose outlets with Kimberley, moving into general fit out projects direct with Waitrose as well as continuing to build shells. Farrell & Clark now provide a full service to Waitrose whilst retaining Kimberley as a client on other projects.

More recently, in 2012, Farrell & Clark were appointed lead consultant on the very first Waitrose and John Lewis at Home. This 100,000ft2 outlet in Ipswich Cranes was the first time Waitrose and John Lewis at Home units were designed to be adjacent to each other. As the layout requires less floor space per unit, this flexibility has allowed John Lewis to move into more locations across the country and there are now currently five food and home stores.

Naomi Wells, Head of Future Planning and Sustainable Development, Waitrose, says: “Developing long-term deliverable strategies, which are stretching and relevant, is crucial to our success. Farrell & Clark have embraced and supported our goals, providing workable and achievable solutions that have helped us deliver improved sustainability whilst keeping on budget and within the required time frames.”

Formed in 1985 by partners Donald Clark and John Farrell, the company has grown to offer a bespoke planning, design and development service, dedicated to the creation of innovative design. With offices based in London and Leeds, the team at Farrell & Clark work together as one unit and members from both design studios regularly work across a variety of projects.

Gabriel McAtarsney, Partner at Farrell & Clark London, said: “Our relationship with Waitrose has been a beneficial one for both parties and we are committed to providing them with design solutions in an effort to deliver the best possible retail environments. It is a genuine pleasure to be a part of their continued success and development.”

Farrell & Clark have been recognised for the quality of their buildings with success in many national and regional awards. Most recently the Bright Building at the University of Bradford was crowned the ‘Best Sustainable Project’ at the West Yorkshire LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards, and is widely considered to be one of the world’s most sustainable with an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM rating.
