AEDAS DESIGNS FOR DEWSBURY CREMATORIUM GAIN PLANNING

Designs for a new crematorium in Dewsbury by Aedas have gained planning approval.

The £2.6m project has been commissioned by Kirklees Metropolitan Council Bereavement Services and will replace the existing 1960’s Dewsbury Moor Crematorium.

The building will be located on steeply sloping landscape with panoramic views to the west across the Lower Spen Valley and is conceived as an object in the landscape. Taking cues from the natural contours a dramatic sculptural form arcs above an orthogonal sandstone and granite plinth set into the slope.

The roof tapers to a seven metre cantilever above the reception space and remembrance chapel, forming a porte cochere, before sweeping above the chapel to allow uninterrupted views across the valley from within. The corten steel form then touches ground before folding up to envelope the crematory.

Visitor parking is cut into the landscape behind the building and a sinuous canopy draws visitors towards the reception area and chapel. Following the ceremony, mourners are led through tiered gardens allowing time for private contemplation and remembrance.

The project is due to start on site in August 2010 with completion in July 2011.
