Devereux Architects submits plans for hotel and residential development

Devereux Architects has submitted plans for a luxury beachfront hotel and residential apartments.  The £20m redevelopment for Roffey Homes will help to rejuvenate the seafront and attract new visitors to the town.  It will be the first purpose-built hotel constructed in Worthing in more than a century.

Devereux Architects’ designs for the development consist of three distinct elements: a central glass tower, a hotel to the west and apartments to the east. Influenced by its seafront location, the design has a nautical emphasis with a landmark feature of a wave-shaped roof and vertical glass bay, which will be particularly prominent at night when the building will be illuminated.

The proposed hotel will provide versatile accommodation for both leisure and business users with 76 deluxe guest rooms and suites, state-of-the-art spa and leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna and gym. In addition, Devereux Architects has designed a unique glazed ‘winter garden’ that will link some of the internal public function spaces with a series of guest rooms which can be reconfigured into serviced apartments for longer-term business use.

The residential apartments will be located to the east of the hotel, compromising of 22 two bedroom and 26 three bedroom units as well as a four bedroom duplex penthouse. All apartments will be furnished to a high standard throughout and will each include a private balcony or terrace.

Devereux Architects has given careful deliberation to the aesthetics of the building, with the hotel and residential elements displaying a separate aesthetic that identifies the separate functions, but using a cohesive palette of materials that unifies the building as a whole. The simple detailing of the west side has been designed to provide a foil to the elaborate period detailing of the adjacent hotel. To the east side the architecture takes on a more prominent look with a striking metal and glass design.

Feedback from two public consultations, as well as advice offered by Worthing Borough Planning and Conservation Office, English Heritage and the West Sussex Design Group, have helped to shape Devereux Architects’ planning designs.

Matthew Heath from Devereux Architects commented: “The proposals have been designed to compliment this unique beach-front setting, deferring visually to the adjacent listed building with a well-mannered proposal that is proudly modern whilst being responsive and sympathetic to its surroundings.  The high quality of materials employed will sit comfortably with the local vernacular, strengthening the sense of ‘place’ and providing a new focal point for the Worthing sea front and the wider Conservation Area.”

Managing Director of Roffey Homes, Ben Cheal, said: “It is impossible to underestimate the importance of such a scheme in aiding the regeneration of the seafront.  This is a significant investment in the area and an incredible opportunity for Worthing, signalling its intent to enhance the accommodation and facilities available to visitors and tourists, and ultimately broaden its appeal to a wider market.”
