Construction is now well advanced on the Abu Dhabi Ladies Club by Tony Owen Partners and UPA planning. This unique facility has been designed specifically for women in the UAE. It provides a range of health, education, child care and sporting facilities for women.

The project was designed in 2008 and is expected to be completed in February. The Ladies Club is a 30,000m2 cultural facility located on the waterfront in Abu Dhabi City.

The Abu Dhabi Ladies Club project will contain cultural, recreational and education facilities for women in the UAE. It will contain a 1000 seta function hall, conference hall and accommodation, multi-purpose auditorium, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a spa facility, women’s health facilities, craft and education facilities and children’s crèche and recreation areas.

The facility will also provide small business resources and training for women in the UAE.

The project is located on a beachfront site and will eventually contain a water park and extensive gardens.

The design is derived from the folding of traditional Islamic fabrics and patterns. The complex consists of a series of wings arranged around a central covered festival space. A feature of the Abu Dhabi Ladies Club design is a series of large fabric roof forms derived from the petals of a flower. These roofs are made from a unique pattern using 2 types of PVC fabric; a solid fabric and a translucent lace fabric. This design allows for areas of shade and areas of natural light.

The facades of the curved stone clad walls contain a distinctive window patterning. This pattern is based on the bracing pattern of foliage and is derived using computer generated ‘L-System’ modelling.
