Eco-build Wales to build National Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion

Young dynamic construction company, Eco-build Wales, have been announced as the contractor who will build the National Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion 2012.

A Welsh Landscape by Coombs+Jones will be built as the architecture pavilion for the National Eisteddfod in the Vale of Glamorgan in August 2012.

Carl Morris, Managing Director of Eco-build Wales said:
“Eco-build Wales are excited to be chosen as the main contractor to deliver this unique project to the National Eisteddfod, in conjunction with the Royal Society for Architects in Wales. Our approach to all construction projects, here at Eco-build, is to adopt a fabric first approach in delivering sustainable solutions to satisfy our clients brief. The winning design embraces a number of these issues and we are looking forward to working with the design team in delivering this pavilion. Our use of locally sourced materials and resources will ensure that this build will have the absolute minimal impact on the environment.”

Eco-build Wales join the collaborative partnership of the RSAW, Design Circle and the National Eisteddfod to deliver the scheme, previously announced as A Welsh Landscape by Coombs+Jones.

Liz Walder, Director of the RSAW said:
“We are delighted that Eco-build Wales are on board to undertake the building of the Coombs+Jones pavilion at the National Eisteddfod 2012. I am confident that Eco-build Wales will deliver this project using the most sustainable form of construction available.“

The scheme will be built near Y Lle Celf, the visual arts centre at the National Eisteddfod in mid July. The building of the scheme will be filmed and will be available online.

Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion Winner

A Welsh Landscape wins National Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion competition

The scheme, “A Welsh Landscape”, by Coombs+Jones has been announced as the winner of the National Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion competition.

This scheme will be built as the architecture pavilion for the National Eisteddfod in the Vale of Glamorgan in August 2012.

The jury said:
“The scheme is a delightful gem which carries through the poetry of the design to the detail. Named as ‘A Welsh Landscape’, its timber construction surrounded by a grid of trees, is a beautiful interpretation of countryside around us. It will truly become part of the Welsh landscape once it is built as part of the National Eisteddfod.”

Ty Hir (The Welsh Longhouse) by James Lockwood was highly commended by the jury.

Dan Benham RIBA, Chairman of Design Circle, said:
“After much debate and deliberation, the jury decided to award the competition to A Welsh Landscape. It was a very close call for the panel members, whose experience stretched across the breadth of the construction field, and a final show of hands showed how narrow the margin of winning was for Coombs+Jones.

It is for this reason, that in the inaugural year of the National Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion competition, we have awarded a Highly Commended placing to Ty Hir by James Lockwood.”

The jury consisted of: Chris Lynn (Troup, Bywaters + Anders / Building Regulations Advisory Committee Wales), Ffion Lanchbury, standing in for Elfed Roberts (Grwp Gwalia), Clare Wilding, standing in for Thomas Hill (Mann Williams), Karen Chapman (RPA), Alan Gwynant (National Eisteddfod of Wales), Wendy Richards (Design Commission for Wales), RSAW President Andrew Sutton (BRE Southwest/ Building Regulations Advisory Committee Wales), Rob Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan Council), Phil Williams (Planning Officers Society for Wales), Carl Morris (Eco-Build Wales), Fed Pereira (Pear Communications), Sarah Gealy (Chair, CIBSE South Wales / AECOM) and RSAW Director Liz Walder.

The jury was chaired by Dan Benham (Chair, Design Circle / Loyn & Co Architects).

Four entries for the National Eisteddfod of Wales Architecture Pavilion have been announced by the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW), the National Eisteddfod and Design Circle.

Panel members were pleased to have the opportunity to assess 31 entries for the competition. Entries were diverse in nature and of high quality and the judges spent several hours deliberating before reaching a shortlist.

The shortlist will be assessed at a second judging session in April, to find one winner which will be built as the architecture pavilion for the National Eisteddfod in the Vale of Glamorgan in August 2012. The shortlist is announced as:

Criteria used for judging the entries were set out in the briefing documents and included concept and innovation, spatial arrangements and compliance with current regulations, use of low embodied energy materials and/or renewable energy sources, passive design, construction methodologies and realism around budget. Entries also needed to meet criteria regarding the accommodation of small events, exhibitions and talks, and the National Eisteddfod Architecture Awards events, supported by the Design Commission for Wales.

Dan Benham RIBA, Chairman of Design Circle, said:
“Overall we were very impressed by the quality of entries, the widespread approach to the principles of good innovative design and a clear understanding of the distinctiveness of Wales and the importance of the international reputation of the National Eisteddfod, its most important cultural festival.”

The jury consisted of: Elfed Roberts (Grwp Gwalia), Thomas Hill (Mann Williams), Karen Chapman (RPA), Chris Lynn (Troup, Bywaters + Anders / Building Regulations Advisory Committee Wales), Robyn Tomos and Alan Gwynant (National Eisteddfod of Wales), Carole-Anne Davies (Design Commission for Wales) and was chaired by Dan Benham (Chair, Design Circle / Loyn & Co Architects).

RSAW President Andrew Sutton (BRE Southwest/ Building Regulations Advisory Committee Wales), Sarah Gealy (Chair, CIBSE South Wales / AECOM) and RSAW Director Liz Walder will join the representatives from the sponsoring organisations and the jury for the second judging session.

Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion

Competition for Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion announced

For the first time in its history, the 2012 National Eisteddfod of Wales Architecture Pavilion will be created by a Welsh Designer.

Entry deadline + geographical entry limitations tbc

The National Eisteddfod, Design Circle and the RSAW are pleased to announce the design competition, in which the winning entry will be built at the 2012 National Eisteddfod in the Vale of Glamorgan. The winning pavilion will house a programme of events during the August festival including the presentation of the Gold Medal for Architecture (Alwyn Lloyd Memorial Medal), supported by the Design Commission for Wales; the presentation of the Plaque of Merit and the Architecture Scholarship.

Angharad Pearce Jones, Chair of the Eisteddfod Visual Arts Panel said: “One of the National Eisteddfod’s main aims is to draw attention to the importance of architecture in the nation’s culture and to honour architects achieving the highest design standards. This exciting venture will certainly set us well on the way to achieving that goal.

Here’s further evidence of the continuing recognition of architecture’s vibrancy, of which the National Eisteddfod is pleased to be a part.”

It is hoped that the Architecture Pavilion will reflect the vision of Welsh Architecture for 2012 and will be a space for people to be inspired, whilst being a place to celebrate the arts.

The competition jury are keen that the winning design should speak about the future, a dialogue of what is to come, whilst also being a celebration of the moment within the National Eisteddfod 2012.

This is also the first time that the RSAW and Design Circle have worked directly with the National Eisteddfod to run a design competition, the winner of which will be seen by 150,000 visitors.

Andrew Sutton, RSAW President said: “The RSAW and Design Circle are thrilled to be partnering with the National Eisteddfod of Wales on this unique collaboration. We want visitors to the Architecture Pavilion to be enthralled and excited by the building itself, and what better way to do this than to encourage innovative and imaginative ideas from amongst our sole practitioners and students.”

The winning pavilion will have a life beyond the National Eisteddfod, as it the brief specified the structure to be demountable in panel form for future use by the RSAW and Design Circle.

Combining ceremonial and official activities with a dynamic, young-spirited and welcoming festival, it offers something for everyone – whatever their ages and interests.

The Eisteddfod’s aim is to promote the Welsh language and culture, influencing an area culturally, linguistically, at community level and economically, building and developing a sense of local and national wellbeing and citizenship amongst the people of Wales and its supporters.
