BENNETTS ASSOCIATES’ FIRST PROJECT OUTSIDE THE UK A STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETION – CITY INN AMSTERDAM TOPS OUT

London 21 April 2010: City Inn Amsterdam, Bennetts Associates first project outside the UK, is a step closer to completion after the building was topped out in a ceremony last Thursday.

As a prominent part of the Amsterdam’s Eastern Dock Island regeneration project, masterplanned by Erik van Egeraat Associates, the euro 63M hotel develops the award-winning concepts first completed by Bennetts Associates at City Inn Westminster in 2003.

Located adjacent to Centraal Station, the 28,000 m² hotel is designed around a courtyard, with two public floors below nine levels of bedrooms. The bedrooms, expansive terraces and the SkyLounge are arranged to maximise the views across water and a spectacular panorama of the old town.

On the north side, the Island’s access road undercuts the building and produces a cantilevered range of accommodation that accentuates its angular plan while on the south side, the public areas spill out on to the pedestrianised quayside.

The facades are a complex series of material layers, comprising moveable shutters, timber or metal panels and brickwork, which emulate the spirit of traditional Dutch architecture whilst being faithful to the needs of high quality hotel rooms.

This is one of several projects for City Inn currently being undertaken by Bennetts Associates and follows the recent topping out of City Inn Tower of London. The 600 bedroom hotel includes a roof top SkyLounge and will offer stunning views of The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and the financial district of the City of London. It will be completed at the end of 2010 and is scheduled to open in early 2011.
