Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre
New Leisure Centre in Kirkcaldy
A new £15m Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre building designed by B3/Cre8 Architects has opened.
Built by Graham Construction the facility includes a 25m main pool, 17m training pool, a health suite with steam room and sauna, a sports hall, aerobics studio, play centre, gym and a café.
It is the third of three leisure centres in Fife to be completed as part of the Council’s Future of Leisure programme. Carnegie Leisure Centre re-opened in late 2011, and the Michael Woods Sport and Leisure centre in Glenrothes opened in July 2013.

The new Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre presents its ‘public’ face to the Esplanade and the waterfront seeking to energise both with a dynamic and active façade that strives to become a positive catalyst for future waterside development.

The orientation of the building and the entry sequence seek to reinforce Tolbooth Street as the primary public realm route to the Esplanade and the front door.

Leisure facilities that generate activity, colour and vibrancy have been orientated to the front of the building to maximise the animation of the waterfront edge.
The building becomes a shop window to the Esplanade with functions on display – cafe, pool, fitness and foyer – with light, colour, activity and vibrancy engaging and delighting the public.

The massing of the building has been broken down to respond to the smaller scale and roofscape of the surrounding context with simple, dynamic forms adding drama and visual tension.
Internally the double height foyer offers visual permeability across both swimming pools with connectivity to the first floor café pod that captures expansive views across the water.

The cantilevered fitness suite hovers dramatically above the entrance with links to the first floor gymnasium and aerobics studios, with glimpse views down into the pool halls.

Glenrothes Leisure Centre
The Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre

The primary driver in the design of the new Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre is the desire to create an engaging and stimulating environment that improves health by actively encouraging participation in sports and leisure facilities. The design concept has delivered a building that responds sympathetically to its context with good connectivity and visual permeability between the key internal activities and the external landscape. The building promotes accessibility for all with a clear sense of arrival and a layout that is simply laid out and easy to navigate.

The large sports hall and pool hall volumes combine to generate a striking contemporary facility with the complex juxtaposition of cubic forms flooding the interior with natural light delivering spatial intrigue and delight.

Dramatic glazed slots offer glimpse views into the pool hall while the glazed fitness suite that activates the frontage to Viewfield Road enjoys expansive landscape views. The foyer, reception and cafe are positioned to connect visually to all key functions within the building with key linkages between changing and sports areas and connections to quality cafe areas.

Materials have been carefully selected to be durable, easily cleaned and low in embedded energy. The centre offers excellent levels of environmental comfort optimising sustainable forms of construction, materiality, management and energy use with rainwater harvesting, biomass boilers and an impressive Very Good BREEAM rating.

Edinburgh-based cre8architecture gets sports boost
as two new projects get underway
Edinburgh-based cre8architecture in a joint venture with B3 Architects have recently obtained planning consent for two new major sports facilities in Fife, Scotland. The projects are part of a £50 million investment by Fife Council in sport facilities.
The swimming pool and sports & leisure facilities developments in Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes received a £2.5m funding boost from sportscotland following planning permission being granted, with construction set to begin in spring 2010.

Both projects are being undertaken as part of the Scottish Government’s drive to help improve facilities across Scotland ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Peter Bowman, a partner at cre8architecture said: “We were delighted to have been selected as the joint architect for these projects and have been working very closely with Fife Council throughout the design process. The strong design concepts reflect the council’s ambitions to build state-of-the-art sports & leisure facilities.

Not only does this benefit the building and design sectors in the current environment, but it undoubtedly has a long-term positive impact on the communities that can use and enjoy them in the future.”
The new Kirkcaldy leisure centre will include a 25m main swimming pool, a smaller teaching pool with moveable floor, health suite, full-size sports hall, play centre, a 60-station fitness suite, large aerobics studio, meeting room and a café.
In Glenrothes, the existing Fife Institute will be replaced and upgraded to provide a high level training and competition facility. The centre will include an 8-lane 25 metre competition pool, training/teaching pool with moveable floor, teaching/remedial pool, health suite, an 85-station fitness suite, strength and conditioning room, 8-court regional sports hall, a purpose-built aerobics studio, two multi-purpose activity rooms, a meeting room, two squash courts, 3 x 5-a-side 3rd generation football pitches, 1 x 7-a-side 3rd generation football pitch, sand dressed hockey pitch, tennis court and resurfaced athletics track, café service and seating.
