Urban Splash development of listed sixties deck-access housing blocks. This is a sensitive regeneration of an heroic Grade II* listed building that had become maligned due to the problems associated with poorly maintained social housing.

The client and the architects have addressed the somewhat contradictory demands of conservation and commerce. The team has worked with stakeholders English Heritage to find a balance between retaining the Brutalist language while changing public perception of the building.

Sheffield City Hall
Date built: 1929-32
Sheffield City Hall
Sheffield City Hall is a Grade II* listed building which dominates Barker’s Pool, one of Sheffield’s central squares. It was built and is owned by Sheffield City Council but is now managed by the Sheffield City Trust, under a 99-year lease and is operated by Sheffield International Venues as a venue for concerts and other events in its various rooms.

It is a building in the neo-classical style with a giant portico. The building was designed in 1920 by architect E. Vincent Harris, however construction was delayed eight years because of the poor economic climate. It opened in September 1932.
