Fentress Architects Announces Winning Projects for Annual Student Global Challenge

2017 Fentress Global Challenge – Imagining the 2075 Airport of the Future

Denver, CO (December 2017) — Fentress Architects today announced the winners of the 2017 Fentress Global Challenge, an international design competition challenging young and student architects to envision an Airport of the Future for the year 2075. Judged by an esteemed panel of aviation and design professionals (see below), the winning designs “were very impressive in terms of both the quality of design as well as the use of technology, which was very innovative and creative,” per Curt Fentress, Principal of Design at Fentress Architects.

This is the sixth year that Fentress Architects has sponsored and administered the award, which brings a First Prize of $15,000 and a summer internship at Fentress’ Denver office; four additional winners will receive smaller cash awards.

Fentress Global Student Architecture Challenge 1st prize

This proposal for the O’Hare International Airport floats on lake Michigan next to the Iconic Navy Pier downtown Chicago. The design uses pods that passengers can enter and exit at the start of their journey. These pods are loaded into aircraft that use vertical takeoff and landing. The well-thought-out proposal outlines a sustainable and functional design. Judges particularly liked the challenge to the current airport along with thinking about a new type of plane, and were impressed with Smith’s clear drawings and good research.

Fentress Global Student Architecture Challenge 2nd prize

“The living airport” also known as the “intelligent airport” is equipped with a computer mainframe (brain) ran by an artificial intelligence program. It has the capability to progress itself by developing more adaptive and technically advanced systems. Its sensors in the control tower and different locations in the whole airport synthesizes, analyses, and elicits precise responses and solutions to the most common irregularities or complex concerns.

Fentress Global Student Architecture Challenge 3rd prize

The Heathrow International Airport proposal outlines a new future for the airport, with a focus on accommodating future passenger growth. The design utilizes high speed trains to seamlessly move passengers. Ir integrates drones and advanced technology throughout the airport and incorporates a 5-story urban farming area and green spaces throughout.

Fentress Global Student Architecture Challenge 4th prize

This entry looks at the connection between cities and airports. The airport and terminal gates surround urban cores that are comprised of civic structures and mixed use buildings. The proposal takes into account the spatial relationship, security, transportation and modern airport systems.

FENTRESS ARCHITECTS ANNOUNCES JURY AND SHORTLIST
FOR THE 2017 ANNUAL STUDENT GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Denver, CO (November 2017) — Fentress Architects is proud to announce the jury and shortlisted projects for the 2017 Fentress Global Challenge, an international design competition for young and student architects.

The shortlist includes 14 exemplary projects from international design students tasked with designing the Airport of the Future.

The esteemed panel of judges, eight aviation and industry professionals, seek designs that incorporate new thinking and innovative ideas for airport design.

Winners will be announced on November 30.

This year’s jury features aviation experts and industry professionals, including Aileen Cho, Senior Editor at Engineering News-Record (ENR); Chester Chipperfield, freelance Creative Director at Boom Supersonic and former Creative Director of Tesla; Curt Fentress, of Fentress Architects; David Brody, Founder and Chairman of XTI Aircraft Company; Khaled Naja, Executive Vice President for the Infrastructure & Development Division of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport; Kim Day, CEO of Denver International Airport; Michael McCoy, first recipient of the Smithsonian’s Design Minds National Design Award; and Tom Allett, Editor of Airports International Magazine.

With over 500 student entries from more than 50 countries representing universities in six continents, the competition generated worldwide interest. Fresh ideas included airport verticality to decrease the traditional airport footprint and “intelligent airports” with “brains” that utilize AI. Each student developed a detailed and concise strategy to ensure that the future airport experience is as efficient as it is socially conscious and ecologically sound. Team Sea Kay of Univeristi Teknologi Malaysia imagined the Airport.Zip, a “compressed” airport that sits amid a solar farm.

Additional entries were submitted by Team Polina Yavna of Moscow Architectural Institute (MARCHI) – State Academy, who reconfigured the Moscow Airport as an Aerotropolis; Team Oliver Pozegic of Manchester School of Architecture in the UK, who proposed Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport as “Planestation”; Team DMD 511 from Qingdao University of Technology in China with an elaborate Vertical Airport; Team Thomas M. Smith of University College in London, whose entry includes “capsule boarding” and suggests relocating O’Hare Airport in Chicago to the Lake Michigan Waterfront; Team Jia Yapp of the Welsh School of Architecture/Cardiff University, who projected “Heathrow 2.0”; and Team Tufa of the Architectural Association in Mexico, with an entry entitled “The Urban Form of Aviation.”

FENTRESS ARCHITECTS ANNOUNCES ITS ANNUAL STUDENT GLOBAL CHALLENGE

6th edition invites students to re-envision the terminal building in the year 2075

Denver, CO (May 2017) — Fentress Architects, based in Denver, Colorado, announces the 2017 Fentress Global Challenge, an international design competition for young and student architects. As in years past, the theme, consistent with the firm’s expertise in airport design and aviation, is envisioning an airport of the future.

Participants are encouraged to re-envision the terminal building in the year 2075 using one of 10 existing international airports, taking into consideration local context, technological trends, and project feasibility and passenger experience.
