KEPPIE CONTINUES TO BUILD IN CHINA

The international architects’ practice, Keppie Design, has ended 2011 with two major project wins in China.

Keppie has secured a mixed-use masterplanning project in Tangshan province for a prominent local developer, Jiangsu Chenhui. The project contains hotels, retail, office, spa resort & health clubs, residential apartments and luxury residential villas. The development will cover 160,000 sqm with buildings being restricted to a maximum of 6 storeys. The project is a part of the new Tangshan Hotspring development masterplan.

Keppie is also developing designs for the China Investment Corporation in Beijing. The 60-storey commercial tower is within the newly planned Central Business District of Beijing, on a prominent plot facing Chang’an Street. The building is 240m high and has 150,000sqm floor area.

After opening a Hong Kong office six months ago, Keppie has continued to build on two years of success with more than 20 commissions won so far in China. The first Keppie win in the fastest developing country on earth was the new Huangshan Theatre in Anhui province, which is now being built and will be completed in 2012.

In the UK, the practice has recently been bucking the market trend by recruiting new staff to respond to its growing order book. The international portfolio and several UK projects including the “Grade A” speculative office development St Vincent Plaza in Glasgow for Abstract and the Cramlington Hospital project in the North east of England have all ensured that practice will start 2012 with a growing team.

Keppie’s Design Director, David Ross, said: “ These are exciting times for Keppie Design. After a couple of very challenging years due to the global economic situation there’s a real buzz around the offices again. The strength of Keppie’s design work and our track record for delivery means the practice is regularly winning work internationally and at home.“
